in my country there is a saying when you dont have any money, and/or have many debts: "I am indebted like Greece"

I kid you not, it is an actual saying. Probably obsolete now, but it is still used among the people

Vet, Greece fulfilled the 3 criteria for the EMU (european monetary union). So it is fixed.

mind you, nobody believed we could do it, hence the enthousiastic reviews Greek economy has been getting from the international press since. (some of them too enthousiastic and not all true).

Markos: Greece should get a national debt clock because the latest figure I could find (1994) showed Greece's external national debt being 140% of GDP. The USA's is only 8% of GDP meaning it is much easier to maintain the balance of payments of the the US then it is for Greece.

Debt increases just like money in the bank increases- with interest.

In facct the US debt is no worse than in elder ages such as the Civil War, etc when compared to the national GDP when compared to ancient GDP's vs. the Dollar.

In fact Andrew Jackson had a problem much like the current one, but he was even DEEPER in debt... So he sold Govt. Lands.

The Govt. owns a LOT of land- esp in Alaska that they could sell if the debt ever got out of hand- but it isnt.

It SHOULD be paid off, but it isn't the horrid monster that some would have you believe.

The sign is mis-leading. Its just stating our debt, and not our abilty to pay that debt. Lets say you lend me $3, I am in debt to you $3. However, if I make $50 an hour, my ability to pay the $3 debt is no big deal.
