Looks fine to me - in time there could also be Vietkong as a unit (the black pyjama militia- would be perfect as a bicicle unit)

I suggest also to make the mortar unit with the NVA's head gear

Looks good ... except, NVA were armed with AK's (a Marine with that hat would make a great Vietcong heh - the Chinese supplied NVA with good helmets).

Historical accuracy-wise this would make an excellent Viet Minh soldier (from the Vietnamese independence war against France), since back then Vietnamese were armed with whatever rifles they could get, and that usually ment bolt-actions (like the one this guy is armed with).

Of course, that only matters if someone is making a very detailed Vietnam War mod.

Great work!

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Believe me, I got my head bit off while I was making this unit in the OTHER civ forum. You can read the mauling in the preview thread. I put all of the historical accuracy aside for 2 reasons. I wanted it to be flexible, for example it can be used as a Viet Minh soldier like you said or a Chinese Infantry. Also, I just wanted to get it done. Besides, it's not like the Legionary from the game is accurate.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm surprised at how many people actually use this unit. I figured it would be my least successful.

Simple things often account for much more than one would initially expect them to .

I am using this unit for a generic Civ mod as early chinese "light infantry" (replacing the in-game "infantry" unit)

I'm actually contimplating making the Viet Cong using the Marines graphic.

I'll have to ask Crist2000 if I can change the Mortar unit to have the straw hat. In my mod instead of getting Artillery, the Vietnamese could get that as a flavor unit. Why the hell not? It would make it more interesting to play as perhaps the most powerful civ in the mod.

Viet Cong preview Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Here's a preview of Viet Cong. I made the green into black, but kept the civ-specific colors. I don't like it when units don't have civ-specific colors, especially ones with a wide variety of uses.

Plain marines look enough like NVA to just use them, but just in case you plan on making more detailed NVA, my suggestion would be to add leaves/branches (jungle camouflage) to the helmet and maybe back of a marine - I just don't think it would look too good since the helmet is only a few pixels wide and high, without much room for extra detail. Might help to tell marines and NVA apart tho.

Tired of ads?

OK, I'm having some problems with the Viet Cong unit.

I replaced the green with the dark grey, I had most of the flics done, checking each and every one to make sure it looks good... and then... I take a really close look... and... THE HAT'S COLOR CHANGES WITH THE CIV COLOR! It's very slight, but it's there.

The only parts that change are the orange parts, so I'm assuming that the problem is red being the civ default color. But, it doesn't do this with the infantry I made which also uses red. Anybody know how I can convert red to blue and have it be the default?

Inflate your Upload Space

I don't know much about how civ assigns civ-specific colors but here's what I think:

a) it's certain color/set of colors at a certain index in the palette, therefore to change anything you'd play around with that.

b) civ checks for a color component (say red, as in your case) of each pixel and assigns the civ-specificity of it based on that, in which case there are two things to try: one, maybe the mask against which it checks each color is some color in the palette again; two it may be in some kind of text file. Or it may just be hardcoded.

I hope I understood what you were asking in the first place heh .

Thank you very much for responding, I appreciate it but I'm already aware of what you just said What I need to know is how do I change the civ-specific default color for that unit to blue instead of red. Many of the units use blue, such as the worker and earlier units, so I know it can be done. I'll have to take a closer look at the images.

Hey level! Haven't talked to you in awhile. How are your units doing?

It isn't about exporting. I needed blue to be the default civ color instead of red (so what I make blue will change to the color of the civ). If I replaced red with blue or exported it like that, then blue would just stay blue and would always be blue even if the civ color was pink, and I don't want that.

Nevermind that though. I'm past that. The reason why the hat worked on the Infantry is because brown was already there. There is no brown in the index of the marine, so it relies on red to make it.

How do I add brown to the index?

I have minimum index image experience... as any graphic artist would stay as far away from it unless they're converting their RPG to a gif.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I got most of the units most of the way done but I keep starting more.

What I meant was export (you can export to the same FXM) in FLICster and change the palette to CivColor 6, it will still change with civ.

It is best to set all the colors in the palette to what you need before you start pasting.
Go to the the color index (in most programs dubble click the curent color) and dubble click the color you want to change.

To make sure it does not use civ-specific-colors you can change the non civ-colored civ-specific-colors (if that doesn't make any sense, it's the 2nd-4th rows in every other column starting with the 2nd) to a unused color then paste the stuf in, you can change the the colors back by changing a copy and pasting the entire thing back in.
