Why not? They lost the franco-prussian war, barely held on in ww1 with british support (the russian front collapsed, giving the germans men to pour on the western, which was only averted by the cannon fodder from the US), and were overrun in ww2 in a month.

Then, what really proves their disgust, is THEY GAVE THEIR NAVY TO THE GERMANS.

The poles, dutch, etc. fought on, and their forces overseas remained on the allied side.

the french fought a civil war between vichy france and the allied supporters.

The terms for surrender given by Hitler to the French said nothing about the navy. Hitler didn't want it, because he thought he could make a good peace with the UK.

This created a bit of an anarchy concerning the French navy. The Royal Navy destroyed a couple of ships (a battleship, methinks) at Mers-el-Kebir to ensure UK naval domination over the Axis. Besides that, some ships joined the British on own initiative. Some were sunk by their crews. I don't have a link right now (too lazy) but I'm pretty sure only a minimum of french ships were surrendered or taken by the Germans.

IIRC, the British asked the French to bring their fleet to the UK right before the Germans captured the port, but they refused, so the British were forced to sink many of their ships to prevent them from being captured by Germany.

The port was in Nort Africa, Tunisia or Morocco. No German troops were near. The whole thing was a big misunderstanding, the French commander didn't realize that he had a choice besides sinking his own ship or having them sunk by the Brits. The British proposal involved taking to ships to USA were they would wait until the war was over. For some reason this never got through to the French commander and the Brits began firing.

Time for a flag change.

France is a wonderful country. 100 times more pleasant to live in than the UK, 1000 times more pleasant than Germany and 10000 times more pleasant than the US.

Great food, great wine, great weather, great women ( ), high standard of living, nice friendly people, relaxed attitude, and doesn't suck the US's **** all the time (which is why the Americans don't like the French of course....).

So what? UK was damn close to losing ww2 but they pulled through. The French threw pretty much everything they had into ww1. Sure they got close to losing but they didn't. For the last time, they were not defeated!

In 1911 Germany's steel production was four times that of France; in 1914 its population was 1/3 bigger; 1913-14 Germany's military expenditure was over 1/3 bigger and the number of troops almost twice as large.

And in 1939, Germany's share of world manufacturing was 3 times that of France, its number of troops over twice as much, and its amount of aircraft almost twice as much.

I wouldn't say they were equals. In fact, France held up damn well against Germany in WW1 after Russia left the war. They stopped and reversed a renewed German offensive well before a single American soldier landed on French soil. The US ended the stalemate that resulted after this, but its biggest contribution to the war was a psychological one.
