Technology - help Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Ok I've decided to bite the bullet and ask the dumb question.

I've played CIV 1 and 2 without problems but whatever I do I cannot get my technology passed the third age in civ3(damn mind blanks)

I've tried rapid expansion. Being peaceful, Being militaristic.
Ive tried building librarys, universities great libraries etc etc but all I seem to do is go broke

Ive had my science funding at %100 but still no result

I am doing something wrong so in short

HELP Please (grovel)

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

What level of difficulty are you playing on? I ask because if you're playing below Regent, then the AI actually has production and research penalties. They research slower than you, meaning that they have less to bring to the table when you smack them around or trade with them (IOW, you have to research every tech yourself).

Play on the higher levels, however, and you almost can't help but rapidly climb the tree.

Well, then, that's probably it (I can't say for sure, as I have never played below Regent, but that's what everybody says here). If you feel comfortable enough with the game concepts by now, move up a level or two in difficulty. You may be surprised to see how much things change there... The key to climbing the tech tree successfully there is trading - you can't outresearch the whole world, you simply HAVE TO trade as much as possible.

ye, moving up a level or two would help ya get your techs faster. The problem with chieftan ( and even warlord, but not to the same extent) is that you have to do all the reaserch by yourself. No A.I. to trade with, because thier reserch rate is far below yours.

Incidently, I think Firaxis will be tweaking the game for PTW so that tech progress is more constant regardless of difficulty level.

I personally try to outrace everybody for tech. Ive been playing regent and I am usually able to stay a few techs ahead. I hate trading techs, its a thing i got playing civ ii. I just always have to be the most advanced....

Inflate your Upload Space

I play monarch and the only way I can keep pace is to set lux to 40%, tax to 100%, and buy all the techs, until I build knights, then I swarm the nearest AI and black mail them for a tech or two. By the Industrial age tho it gets expensive.

herbie,

Do you play with newest patch? (1.29f)

I think it should fix that probelm a little.

The preobelm was that AI is so much backward with tech on chief. that it hampers humn player (no tech. trades).
Same but opposite was happening at higher diffculties (tech to early).

I think that this was tweaked with newest patch. (1.29f)
(by giving AI fixed tech rate on all diff. and giving huamn players bonus on lower and penalities on higher diff.)

Um, that adds up to 140%.

Sure, deficit spending seems great, but it'll catch up with you in the long run.

Also map size has a serious effect on research speed. The smaller the map the slower the research speed. [That does not quite parse.]

If you like the the research rate on the STANDARD map and want it to apply to the other sizes then set the research rates to (w*h)/41.7 on all the maps. If you like the rapid research from the HUGE map set the research rates to (w*h)/64. If you like the slow pace of the TINY maps then (w*h)/22.5 does the trick.

I use (w*h)/64 and get into the modern times on tiny maps.

I would have thought it would be the other way around -- on small maps, research should be speeded up, to compensate for the fact that not as many cities can be built. Also -- the lower the research rate, the faster the research? If the rate of research is higher, shouldn't it go faster?

Congradulations Herbie!

I too, was severely schooled the first few games that I played. I was so disapointed w/ 1 game (the first where I wasn't anhilated) that got to the year 2050 and it said that I had lost. Lost?! I was still alive. Doesn't that count for something?!

After that, my games became much better--especially on the next higher levels.

Hang in there. You'll become awesome before too much longer!
