Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

If we could have bridges it should be a limited distance, or the AI will build a bridg from one side of the map to the other

Accualy, one tile is only 10 square miles, so three tiles would only be 30 miles across.

Yah, a 'real' map of the world would be HUGE & wouldn't be playable off of the worlds most powerful supercomputers.

How does that work? Like in Civ1? I remember back then, when you could actuvate a settler in a boat, and make it build a road...land units couldn't use it though...

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

If you give a road bonus to watter you can build roads on them, not sure if you can use a worker I think you have to give the build road ability to a boat.
In CTP you could build Maglevs on watter and move units acrostd them.

I like the idea of bridges but not to join two continents. Am I the only one that gets irked that I lose a whole movement point crossing a river even when there is a road. Why can't we simply assume that if you build a road over a river then you build a bridge over the river?

I don't want to have to wait until railroads to have this feature. BTW while were at it I want to be able to change the movemnet rate for railroads as well. Having unlimited movement ruins the strategic aspect of the game. I would prefer to have RRs give five times movement points or something like that.

Engineering should allow normal road movement over rivers. Prior to that, it is assumed that your units must pass a ford in the river, which slows them down.

Actually we had a thread where we went and computed it out based on Civ3's settings. Each square is 330 miles across.

By your estimation the state of New York is only 20 miles across at its widest point.....

I think it really depends on the map you are playing. For example, one tile on a map of the Earth on a Tiny sized map represents a whole lot more land than one tile on a Huge sized map of the Earth.

If you start a new game, found your first city, & look at the Demographics, you'll notice that that you only have 900 square miles. Therefore, by doing a little math, you can see that one tile is 10 miles by ten miles. It's the same for all map sizes. Small maps literily represent smaller worlds, & not a real sized world scaled down.

You're right the 330 miles per tile was based on the maximum setting Civ3 allows you to make the map. We had taken the circumfrence of the Earth and divided it by the maximum number of tiles and then double checked it with total surface volume.

So if one tile = 330 square miles at huge, a tile at tiny would be the size of a nationstate.

If this is true for any size map, I would be all for building bridges over one tile of coast. Even though I know it is possible to make a bridge longer than 10 miles, I don't agree that you should be able to do so in the game. I don't think you should be able to bridge more than one tile of coast without it adjoining to some land on the other end. I don't think you should be allowed to bridge over ocean or sea squares.
