NETFLASH!
After several weeks of intense debate the UN has, by a 5-4 vote, decided to authorize the construction of what they call the a 'starship to save humanity'.
"Earth has become a boiling point, and if we do not colonize at least one other planet.....Humanity will destroy itself." UN Secretary-General Nick told reporters in a press conference Sunday.
The ship, dubbed "Unity", has already begun constructing and should be done within the next month. However, some experts say that the ship will never be completly constructed.
"No, its not going to work. You can't take a few dead plants out of a dead garden, and put them in a small container and throw them across the town. Their still dead plants. Plus, its probably going to be sabatoged anyway." UN Human Relations Commissoner Sigonati Sochinszchi was hearted saying during the heated debate inside the UN Council room. Already, there have been several reports from groups such as the Anarchic Peoples Liberation Program of the United States are planning on launching a missile at the construction site.
"They will fail. It's that easy. The construction sites location shall be hidden from the public until the day of the launch. Therefore, nobody can do anything to stop us. And in fact, it isn't even in our computer systems. So hackers, dont even think about doing your geeky things to wreck this." said UN Humanities Chief Previn Lal in reply to Sochindzchis statement.
Although the building site continues to remain a secret, the UN has released some specifications in hopes that people will begin applying to be a part of the crew.
The Unity Starship features an exterior casing that will be "shed" when it lands on the destination planet in the near system of Alpha Centauri. The exterior casing is made up of Plasma Steel to ensure a safe and comfortable ride for passengers on the Unity Starship. The actual starship itself is made up of a new alloy that isn't quite as strong as plasma steel, however it has been created to suit alien environments.
The engines, patterned after the new Russian RU01-PT1 engine, uses fusion energy to travel at speeds not possible on Planet Earth itself, estimated to be at least 100 times faster than the American Subway System (the fastest form of transit in the world).
The Fusion Core itself is also made of Plasma Steel, and generates enough power to sustain the Chinese Empire and the Russian Republic combined. However, this causes the ship to weigh more but UN Officials say that it is critically important.
There are no recreational facilities on the ship as the entire flight time will be spent in "Hibernation Mode", using Hibernate Technology Beds ("HTBs") provided by the Chinese Empire. However in the case of an emergency, these HTBs are able to wake up the passenger in a manner that saves time, and is comfortable for the crew.
The ship is entirely automated by a centeral computer which gives out orders, plots courses, etc. The UN has tested this computer, and has said that the accuracy and reliability of it is "unimagineable". However, the computer is no substitute for a command structure. Already, the UN has placed General Garland as Captain of the starship Unity in the case of an emergency.
