	Revival of the FLAGS! Increase Your PM Length

Can you remember the flags in Civ2? They were boring, but when you replaced them with real national flags, the game got more depth and atmosspheare! I would agree to get them into the addon, what do you think?

You should use the Danish flag for the Vikings. It was the very first of all national flags.

Maybe FIRAXIS should include a flag-editor! Just think of the possibilities.. costumize youre own flag.

Danish flag for the vikings... were the Danish the orginal vikings? Whats about the Norwegians and the Sweden.?
Anyway, they got their own flags!

The American flag could add a star for each city you have. So when you start out, you would have one star. When you have 64 cities, you have 64 stars on your flag.

For our non-American friends, each star on our flag represents one of the 50 states. Since there aren't "states" or "provinces" in Civ, each city could be represented by a star.

yes it would be to see the flags come back.

is that raven in the flag one of the raven's of Odin?

and what kind of flag would Romans use? or Greeks?
SPQR on red for romans? and an Ox or an Owl for Greeks?

A lot of great ideas here! FIRAXIS should seriously take a look on this forum.
Especially dunks idea is great, with the american flag. There are very new possibilties, which would make Civ3 even more better.
What do you think of that. The appearing of the flag changes, when you alter youre government. For example, if you have communism as youre government, the flag changes it appearance - you get a little soviet-symbol in youre flag. Just imagen, the United States have instead their 50 stars (thanks for the information, dunk! ) the hammer and sickle-symbol.

Maybe the civilization change the appearance of their flag in every epoch. For example our Vikings. In ancient times they have the raven-flag, in modern times the Danish flag (or the Norwegian, whatever.. )

Definitely, we need to bring back the flags! A simple (?) animation could have it actually wave (just a little, please!) I agree that it would add so much flavor to the game.
In the ancient ere, it could be a battle standard, hanging vertically from a horizontal pole, like the army leaders in the game already. By the industrial age, they carry the flag as we think of it, hanging horizontally from a vertical pole.

Yea, they must be animated. Youre right maccabee2, i think it wont be easy to "lightly" animate a flag!
There should be no great animations. Think of that, you got for example 30 cities and in every city a flag waves all the time... i think you get pretty nervous after a while.

Hmm.. armies got flags too. Anyway, there shouldnt be difficulties for FIRAXIS, to get them to the cities, dont you think?

I especially like the idea of using the national flags w/ variations based on government and epoch. And for each civ's actual gov then u could have thier actual flag (like Republic for the US would get a US flag as we know it).

Are their ways to reach FIRAXIS? Anyone knows a helpfull link? I just HAVE to post this cool ideas to Sid and the crew. Maybe we can get them to the addon, but we need teamwork now!

Yea good idea...Firaxis really should add flag editor in a patch or PTW! Also, it would be good to have the option to add flags to leaders and armies. There should be a possibility to build flags or banners in your territory or uncolonized terrain where you are staking a claim on and also acts an observation outpost(probably to be used in PTW). The scenarios would benefit alot on this added atmosphere.

anyway, they probably wouldnt have age-specific flags, because what would nations like babylon do? use Iraq's?

Hehe, nice flag, I got a better version of the communist America flag, please note that I didnot design this, it was an ad for Red Alert 2.

I agree to the use of government spesific ones. But for the Vikings: don't use a flag with a cross on it! After all, they weren't christians.

I just made this flag in a few seconds in Photopshop.. and so does it looks..
And to Caliban: what do you think, the german flag should look like, in the industrial age?
I found the flag for the old German Empire, it gots the colours black, white and red. Sadly the colours of the NPD.
But i think, IF there will be flags included, the player should coustomize them for the game as he wants. Maybe in the menue when you starts, after you choose your rivals and youre nation. Just a work of a few clicks, hopefully!
There should be a flageditor included anyway. There were just too much flags in human history, than FIRAXIS could think of them all.

BTW-If anyone finds a way plz post it to a forum as well as this thread so everyone can have thier requests made. (maybe firaxis shoulda sent out a survey for ideas for PTW)

No, I don't think flags would be good because of the following reasons:
1.Not all civs had flags (Iroquis for example)
2.Even those who had ussually changed flags during the time (for example, for Germany, maybe we should use third reich flag. Or maybe west germany. Or maybe east germany. For USA< number of stars changed over a time. And for Russians maybe we should use Soviet Union flag)

Well Sonic, i think that the Iroquis used some kind of sign, as nearly every civilizaton does.
Maybe a flacon or a hand-print - this is a case for the flageditor or youre fantasy.
To youre second point... hm, i dont agree every civilization should get a "special" flags, orginally used in history. For example Germany - it would be wrong to give them bascially the flag of the Third Reich for the game. In Civilization3, you get the "chance", to live youre own history.
Why there should be a Nazi-Germany? There could be a Nazi-England too, just no fix rules for the game.
In fact, Germany was not the land which invented Facism, it brought it "only" to a cruel perfection. Anyway, Facism can happen everywhere - look at France, Belgium, Italy today.
To make it short, it would take a lot of personal freedome in the game, too give the Civs "special" flags.

Japan => Rising Sun (w/ or w/o beams?)
India => Modern Indian Flag?

Iroquois => A Tree? ???

Babylon => Modern Iraqi Flag? (Non-Saddam Version?)
