I would agree that asher seemed to be boasting when he stressed the "paid cash" and fully loaded attributes but I don't find it strange at all that a youth would identify more strongly with their parents accomplishments/ assets than their own.
That said , I thought you were out of line for criticizing an 18 year old for making the very sensible decision to remain at home for a few years for economic reasons.

I did Korea back in Dec 63 Pusan and Jan/Feb 64 Pusan/Pohong.
It was cold and I mean cold. Bring an exter t-shirt you will need it.
