RequireCD=Yes means (I think) that you need the CD to open CtP2.
RequireCD=No means you can get all the way up to the point of loading the actual game, or it seems, changing the sound settings, before you need the CD.

Or its the setting for which install you did. Whether the sound and video is on the CD or not.

You mean you actually like the CTP2 music? IMHO it's insanely frustrating. Though that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I couldn't stop it playing the same track over and over and over... I never heard the other tracks.

Doesn't the music change when you enter a new age? It's the same melody, though. Actually I like the melody and once in a while I even watch the intro again because I think it's actually pretty good for a low machine specs intro (compare it to the civ3 one, there you'll now already before civ3 has started that you won't like the game... )
I never play with the music. Funny thing is I just tried to turn the music back on yesterday though, but it seems that you can't do that when you're already playing.

I don't mind the music either, but it does always seem stuck on the same song. Perhaps it does change with eras, but J and I are playing Cradle, so it takes longer to get out of ancient?

I turned it off after about 20 turns on my first ever game (when I was playing slow to get used to it, so that was probably about 30min), and have never turned it on since. So I don't know if it changes with the age. Many mods increase the number of ages, so that could have strange effects...

well, just a hint:
after getting the game started turn music off, replace the cd by an audio-cd of yours and turn the music on. you will listen to fine music while playing, at least if you like your cd :-P

Redbook is a CD format standard. It represents regular music CDs, like the one you put in your audio CD player. I assume that UseRedBookAudio=Yes means that it will play the regular Audio tracks on the CD in the CD drive, if they are found (your CtP2 CD should have 11 tracks: the first contains all the data, the other 10 the in-game music tracks; the audio tracks should play on your sound installation as well). If it's No, it won't play music from CD, allowing you to play your own music in the background instead (with WinAmp or whatever).

I never tested this though, so I'm not sure if this is accurate. Disabling the music in-game has the same effect, so there's no real need to...

There is a way to play the game without the cd but it depends on hard disk space. It is possible to get software that allows you to save the cd to hard disk and run it from there. However if you have a small hard drive you can't realistic do it.

Erm, you can play the game from HDD anyway, no need for special software. Just do a regular install (full or compact, doesn't matter) and apply the no-CD hack. The only reason why you need the CD is so the game can check if you're not using a pirated version (and in the compact version for the movies as well). Of course, the only disadvantage is that without CD you won't have the music but ripping the audio tracks to MP3 and playing those in WinAmp is easily done as well (I actually prefer this above playing from CD)...

Suffering from ads?

It's against the rules of this site to post no-CDs hacks, or anything else potentially piracy-related. But if you PM or email me (or some of the other regulars), I'll see what I can do for you.

Yes, technically it's a crack. A crack is program that circumvents a security feature of a program.

A hack though is not cheating, it is when you modify the program either by altering the source code (if you have it available) or editing the binary file. The essence of a hack, is that the modification it is not authorized/endorsed by the producer of the software. You could hack a program to cheat (although usually you hack a save file to give yourself extra ... whatever you want), but hacking is not necessarily cheating. Sometimes you have to hack a program to get it to work properly.

Got spare money?

I've seen such software given away on the coverdiscs of some pc magazines recently - sadly i didn't buy any, still i got two CTP2 origonal game disks and use the spare one to listen to the music(with track 1 on skip), this is another way to get over the repeat music bug.
