Copied from the General Forum: Population Numbers Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Population Box # = Population

Note : The "actual" population sometimes varies in relation to a given Population Box # by a few thousand citizens. Example: 1 = 48,000 & 2 = 40,000. Additionally, it may fluctuate each time you load a particular savegame. I do not know why that is, but I do know that it is annoying...

1 ~ 48,000
2 ~ 40,000
3 ~ 71,000
4 ~ 112,000
5 ~ 160,000

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

The scale is actualy a logrithmic scale. The formula is below....

City Population(Current)=City Population Number(Current) x 10000 + City Population(Previous or 1 Size Lower)

Example

If Size 1 = 10000 then this is how size 2 is done......

Population = 2 x 10000 + 10000
Population = 30000

If Size 10 = 550000 then this is how size 11 is done......

Population = 11 x 10000 + 550000
Population = 660000

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Just to add my .02:

Pop(n+1) = n*10,000 + Pop(n)

js code:

var size; // city size (e.g. 5)

var i = 0;
var current = 0;

for (i = 1; i<=size; i ++) {
current = current + i*10000;
}

Population density Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

What about the population of your entire civ? Often in the modern age, I will check the demographic page. It might say something like population: 75,000,000. But then my land area is about 100,000 square miles. This is much more crowded than California! It seems to me this is one area where the game is out of kilter. Yet, it's just a minor point

Tired of ads?

The whole population/territory size thing is screwy. I've always wondered why I'll control half of the world, with large heavily-developed cities, and have a population of a few hundred million. Then I did some calculations and discovered that the default "huge" map is actually about the size of the United States. So actually the problem isn't the population numbers, but the ridiculously small maps (in terms of land area).
