From what I've heard, 16 will still be the max despite the addiotional civs coming with it. The game slows down enough at the moment with that many on a huge map in the modern age...

good point Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

so I guess a scenario with 31 civs is a bit too much huh?

alrighty.... how about this... how fast would a computer need to be to run 31 Civs in a reasonable amount of time?

Get a bigger avatar today!

Try finding 31 people who can play at the same time... and you will get a medal

We should really think of MP in terms of 4 to 8... even a PBEM game will probably not be larger than that.

With Civ II... 4 to 5 people is good... after that, you might as well go to sleep between turns.

Hmmm... 31 players? Might take a while in normal play, but in turnless more it could be cool (Many players will be killed within short time anyway (With 31 players, there's a great risk to start just next to a warmonger)

I really hope they allow at least 24 civs in single player. I want to be able to use all of the "official" civs in one game.

I just don't see multiplayer happening for me (between time constraints and crappy dial-up service...).

I was under the impression it was 32 including the player - is that right?

in addition, I just found out the hard way you can only add 3 civs with the editor the way it is now. I made way more around 24, but it caused the editor to crash...

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

There are supposedly 32 slots for civs, currently 17 are used (16 civs + Barbs). PTW had better have the capability for 24 playable civs in a normal game - XPs should give us something that the fans can't. Ghengis Farb and Sween32 can quite easily create new leaderheads, you only need to do a bit of resaech to get city and leader names. The only thing Firaxis could give us on this front would be increasing the number of civs in a game from 16 to 24. I'll be really pissed if it's still at 16.

you know it would be cool if Barbarians could take over cities as they did in Civ2...

also it gives us the ability to place cities without identifying it with any civ - kind of like a neutral one...

Barbarians can't run a city, it is fine that they can only raid it.

The default number of civs in the single-player game will not be changed in PTW. Thus, you can have 4, 6, 8, 12, or 16 civs (including the human player), depending on world size. Using the editor, you can increase the number of civs allowed on any world size to 31 (including the human player).
For multiplayer, we are still working on determining the max. civs allowed but it will be no more than 8.

Note that the barbarians are not taken into account in any of the above statements; if you consider the barbarians a civ, then add 1 to each of the previous numbers.

I just want to clarify..

so the editor will allow us to create and place up to 31 Civs on a map - right?

Does this mean all 31 Civs will be able to play in one game or does it simply mean we can choose from amongst 31 Civs?

thanks!

Yes, you can create and place 31 civs on the map. Using a scenario or mod, you can play 31 civs in the single-player games.

Thanks for the info, two questions:

1. Is it possible to have a multiplayer game with computer controlled civs attending, for example to have 4 human players and 4 computer players? I assume computer controlled civs can be part of a "classic" multiplayer game, but I somehow doubt this will be possible for "exotic" modes like "Regicide", as this should require a new AI (but as Soren is not part of the PTW team this probably is not possible).

2. What happens if there is a scenario for more than 8 players and you want to play it in multiplayer? Does PTW reduce the available civs automatically or does it refuse to play the scenario?

We are still working on determing which multiplayer modes will have the AI available.

Any game played in multiplayer can have no more than 8 players, whether they are human-controlled or AI-controlled. If you attempt to play a scenario with more than 8 player slots, the number of available player slots will be reduced to 8 and each player will be able to select from among all player slots as their civ. For example, if you attempt to play a 16-player scenario, you will be presented with 8 player slots but each player can choose which of the 16 civs in the scenario they are playing. So you will only get 8 of the 16 players but you will be able to select which 8 of the 16 are in the game. Note that the maximum number of players in multiplayer has not yet been determined but will be at most 8.

Would it not be possible to include this in Play The World .
Or at least in some expantion pack .

Would it be possible to give one human player control of more then one civilization .
Or control of a culture group .
