I have one but I'll probably get rid of it. Of course that's what I did with Cingular. I could only go 3 months without a cell phone

I hear they may cause long term memory damage, but I can't remember where I read that.

edit: Oh, I forgot to mention few more stupid things about cell phones.
It makes people paranoid. When you call to your friend, you know he/she can see that you're calling.. no answer.. you start to wonder why it wasn't answered.. is he/she dissing me? Was it a bad time? If it was, well uh, that's bad, I can get blame for it.. Will my friend call me back? Why doesn't he/she call me back already? Should I call again? Or send a text message?

oh boy

yep. that's a problem as well. especially for me who sometimes just want to be left alone.

and there is the question of how to not answer it. cause if you press the cancel button the cell phone will give the busy tone immiddiatly and the caller will know that you have basically shut the phone on his/her face.

but if you have it on loud you cant really suffer the dang thing ringin all the time untill it quits.

and then there the godamn text messages. thse you cant avoid. and you have to answer them. and you might not feel like it.

and then they call you at the home phone (where there's usually no caller identification) and ask you, didnt you get my message why didn you call etcetctec

and you have to AAAARGH make a ton more of excuses that you would usually have to make. ****ing hell.

i have had about 4 cell phones. gave up one after another and then always found myself getting a new one and a new one and sh!t!

OTOH cell phones are cool when you want to reach your gf anytime you want

they are bad when you want to be left alone.

now there is even a ****ing song about what you described Pekka. the lyrics are hilarious, ill try to translate

why did you had your cell phone turned off?

since you knew that i was going to call you

something is going on, otherwise there is no explanation

you knew i was going to call you
so why is my call being diverteted?

god.

it's crazy here as well. i doubt it's crazier somewhere else although its not impossible.

Got spare money?

and the ring tones... every godamn bastard has come up with hundrends of them

ring tone this song, ring tone the other song

ring tones on tv on the net on ads ring tones everywhere

and when you're in a croweded place and a cell phone rings everybody' starts to search to their pockets or their bags untill the fooker who got the call answers and then they all quit.

OTOH there are really life saviors.

an example.

some guy had taken his small boat and sailed off to the aegean. somehow he managed to get stranded in a barren rock somewhere in the middle of the aegean and his small boat sank.

maybe he would have died out there if not for his cell phone which he used to call the authorities and they used the signal to locate his position and come and save him.

ring tones are good. when a phone rings I know its not mine. I use Hall of the Mountain King. I haven't heard anyone use that one.

Of course many people can't figure that out. They hear someones custom ring tone. they should realize its not theirs, yet they still reach for their phones. oh well

Not answering the phone i not really an issue for me anymore because there is a mute button in my phone (naturally a Nokia) it keeps ringing but the person in the other end doesnt know i dont hear it and it doesnt bother people around me but usually i just keep my phone silent and use the vibrating alert.

crap then.

it does have that navi button.

i'll test it by pressing the other buttons in the right side later on. maybe there is an option there. or maybe the top button (on the top part of the phone)

if i press the navi button it answers. if i press the left button it cancels (doesnt mute).

i have managed not to pay a dime for my cell phones actually

there are some pretty lucrative deals here with the mobile phone companies, there was a time they were giving everything for free (different models of phones) as long as you took a subscritpion.

i have managed to not pay for any of the 4 i've changed

the last one i got it free from an offer of my bank.

no way im going to pay 1140 for a cell phone (but then again i'm not big on cell phones

oh fook, it's rining now! checked the buttons, there is NO mute. definitely.

I hate them. Hell, I'm not all that big on the telephone to begin with, but to have the damn thing along with me all the time is way over the line. I have gone years at a time without phone service in the past. Sometimes I wish I didn't have one still. I probably call or receive a call about once a day from someone who I want to speak to, and about 3 times a day from people that I don't want to speak to.

I find people speaking into their cell phones on the bus etc. very annoying. Perhaps if everyone around them raised their voice as well and had an imaginary conversation these people could be harrassed or shamed into allowing the rest of us a little quiet space to think or rest in our busy days.

Pekka and fellow scandinavians: Move to a third world country like the US, and you'll shortly be crying for your good old scandinavian cellphone. Not to mention threatening bodily harm to your friends because they won't get one. Do you even remember how incredibly annoying it is to have friends late for a movie but you can't call them to ask whether you should wait for them or just go on without them?

I don't get the whole 'cellphones are antisocial' part. It totally depends on what you do with them. Ever called around to see who is up for dinner? Ever got a call from someone who wanted to see if you were interested in dinner? Did it make you feel appreciated? Ever realized that you didn't feel like going home and instead called a few friends to rendez-vous at a coffee shop?

BTW, what is wrong with the guy sitting at the bar alone and talking on his phone? Would you rather he'd go home to his lonely apartment? How is it more social to be alone than to talk to someone? Or are you implying that he should sit alone in the bar trying to strike up conversations with strangers? How often does that happen? How often have you done that? I often take the opportunity to call friends when I'm walking somewhere. The alternative is walking in silence. Does this make me anti-social? Hardly.

Intrigingly, the same people who complain about how cell phones are anti-social often complain about the content of the calls as well, how filled of banalities they are. Well, banalities are what call social interactions. When your friend asks you where you are, this has no real importance to his life. He asks because you are his friend. That is it.

'I hate cellphones because my boss can reach me all the time'. Well, this is a two-way street, isn't it? It all depends on what you do with it. I love the fact that my boss can reach me on my cellphone, cause that means I'm not tied to the office. I can work at home, on my balcony or in my couch, at the coffeeshop, on the lawn... It doesn't matter.

Finally, 'cellphones are rude'? Que? How is this possible? Is it the very act of ringing that is rude? If a friend sees you while talking with someone and crosses the street to say hi, does that make him rude? Wouldn't it be more rude for him NOT to cross the street? Quite frankly, it would be LESS rude for a friend with a cellphone to call, since he doesn't know whether you are talking to someone or not...

Or is it perhaps the PEOPLE who are rude? That would be my guess. Which makes it pretty stupid to blame the phones, doesn't it? I mean many people are complete *******s in trafic, but that doesn't make cars rude...

So Pekka, enjoy your cellphone. Cherish it. Buy it a second battery to keep it in power. Get a new phone with a more powerful vibrate function if you care about the ringing. And when you don't want to be disturbed - just turn it off. If your friends ***** about it, say you were masturbating. Or having sex. Or having a wicked dump. Or all three. make it clear that there ARE times when you are not talkative, no matter how important they think they are... If they don't understand that, maybe you should rethink your choice of friends instead of your choice of technology level...

Which reminds me: this weekend I wanted to try the rollercoaster on the stratosphere while my girlfriend wanted to see the treasure island show. Only one key to the hotelroom, but two cellphones. Piece of cake, met up an hour later guided by the phones...

Well we could argue about if it's drug or not.. it's not a substance itself, but it sends radiation to your heard through your ear. It alters your brains, they will never be the same. You want to call again and again.. and recent studies show that it can be cause for brain cancer.
But I'd keep it separated from the war on drugs.
Terrorists wants us to use cell phones. So they are evil.
