He won't run again. Will keep position till February 2004, at which point a successor will be chosen.

Great news!

Now Martin has an extra year to prepare.

I guess if we're stuck with one party, it might as well be led by a resonable person, rather than a hack.

Man, I had to guess that this was some Canadian thing. I couldn't tell if it was French, or Canuck, or Belgian or what.

In other news, an American just showed how ignorant he was of that country that's right above his on the map.

As far as I'm concerned, it's crap news for Martin. Now Manley can go all out to prepare; before he had to be on the down low to look respectful. Since the Martin/Chrétien falling out, Martin has had a freer hand.

Has the NDP gotten new leadership yet? I will finally be old enough to vote and I want to vote for a centre party. The Liberals are too right-wing for my tastes.

This is a very adept move for Chretien, but bad of the country. Chretien does not get challenged for leadership, and gets an extra 1.5 years in office. Meanwhile, he's a lame duck, and can't do anything whatsoever. So we essentially have no leadership until he steps down. And it's good for Manley and bad for Martin, as the best thing Martin had was the anti-Chretien vote.

Damn I was hoping Chretien would stick around, it would have gave a united right an opportunity to rise up!

The Liberal party is still full of incompetents, regardless of who leads them. granted the same could be said of all parties.

I think Martin has a bit more going for him than people unhappy with Chretien.

I'll take bets now that Martin wins, if he sticks around to run.

What a pompous arse. He gets everyone all excited by saying that he is stepping down and then says he'll do so in 2004. I was ecstatic, thinking that the old crook finally came to his senses and was going to step down immediately.

I hope Martin gets the nod to lead the Liberals. Even though I'm not a liberal myself, I'd rather see him in there than any of the others. Rock would be my second choice. Manley? He's a scary character.
