Resource Information Question. Full PM-box? Change here!

What are the current rules for using resources under 1.29f? I'm having trouble using the number of strategic resources that I would like to.

There aren't supposed to be any rules. It might be helpful if you mentioned what kind of trouble you're having.

adding CIVs Increase the size of your Attachments

I know it's a lot to ask for, but I'd like to be able to allow two separate techs to enable one given resource or other thing. That is: I want to be able to give certain civs the Horseback Riding tech at start, but not The Wheel. I would like to be able to say, Horses are enabled by The Wheel OR Horseback Riding, so that they are revealed on the map when you acquire either one of these.

Of course, if Firaxis were constructing this logically, which they certainly aren't, the rule would be, if a tech enables a unit which requires a certain resource to build, THEN that resource becomes visible. But that would be too sensible.

What does that have to do with resources?

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

I am having trouble getting strategic resouces to show up. I'm currently using 44 total resources and 14 strategic. Apparently the game can only use so many resources at once. I'm trying to find out what those limits are so that I can use the maximum amount in my mod.

You are using patch 1.29f right? If not, that's your problem. Previous versions did have some limitations. Only so many icons would show up on the map, the rest were invisible.

If you do, I'm not sure since what the problem is since I have you beat on that score, 51 in total, and mine are all showing up. Mind you, I seem to end up with less of the default bonus resources, but there's still a fair number of them. There does seem to be an upward limit, but it's so high you shouldn't be having any problem.

Maybe one thing, I had to uninstall/reinstall the game when I got the latest patch. You might want to try that.

Yes, I'm using 1.29f. Suffering from ads?

Yes, I'm using 1.29f. I did have to reinstall my game to apply the patch as well.
It is true that I am using more bonus resources than you are apparently. Did you add any bonus resources? I'm using Harlans Resouces2 and using as many of them as I believe are historically strategically significant.

What resources are you using and what advances make them appear? I was having trouble with nickle and lead/zinc to appear with metalurgy and gunpowder respectively. I'm also using the Tin and Copper for bronze age units. I'll post later my entire list, I'm at work currently and don't have access.

Yes, I've added a number of bonus resources. One thing I noticed, which might provide an explanation, I had Sheep and Cotton for the Plains, with Sheep in the Hills as well. The Cotton appears in the Plains, but the Sheep don't, though they do end up in the Hills. You might be having some sort of conflict issue, which might be resolved by trying different terrain for these resources.

I'm also using Copper and Tin in Bronze Working, though only for a few select bronze age units, and the Colossus of course. I also have Nickel appearing with Metallurgy. I also have Timber, of course, as well as 3 types of stone for building construction, and Paper. As well, I've made Gold strategic and added Silver using both as a currency basis for Marketplace, Bank etc. And a few other I can't recall right now.

Ioannes, I am also using (many of) Harlan's icons. I think I have about 40-50 total, and I haven't seen any problems so far. I've added some of each category of resource.

One thing to be careful of is that if too many resources share a terrain type, they may be crowded out -- if there are 15 resources that can appear in mountains, say, then not all of them may appear simply for lack of mountains. I think there may be some upper limit to what fraction of a terrain type can have resources; the computer won't put a resource in every single mountain on the map, and there are distribution criteria as well (luxuries clump, strategic don't...).

Thanks. Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

I think of all the possible solutions this terrain conflict seems most likely. I'm going to try deleting sheep and the other hill/mountain terrain bonus resources and see if the two desired resources of Nickel and Lead/Zinc show up when they are supposed to. Also according to this logic, if I reduce the appearance ratio for all resources in the terrain that are conflicting then the likelyhood of each type actually appearing should increase.
Thanks again,
Ioannes.

The appearance ratio shouldn't make any difference, provided the resource is spread out around various terrains. I have several resources, some with a number of 900, but since they appear almost everywhere, it doesn't really cause any problems. I strongly suspect that the terrain conflict is what causing your problems.

You might also want to consider dropping some of the minor ones, like Zinc, and focus on the more important ones, like Nickel. It would be nice to be able to mirror real life, but unfortunately there are some limitiations.
