So you don't dance to house techno and trance?

Dance is the main category, house techno and trance are SUB categories.

Same as rock. Theres light rock, hard rock, heavy metal, alternative, etc. etc., they're all rock music but one individually does not define the genre.

Categorizing things does not mean that people don't know the differences between the sub categories.

If they had 50 categories in the music store it would be very annoying. Most music stores seperate them by rock/pop, r&b, rap, gospel, country, jazz, blues, classical, etc.

Of course diss......only a specialized -dance music- shop would split discs up by house techno and trance. A general music shop never would.

I'm just saying, anyone who listens to trance would never call it "dance" music, even though you can and do dance to it. Those overarching general categories are really only for stores. And what does that matter?

I listen to all sorts of different types of rock music. I refer to it all as rock.

What would they call trance music then?

"Music to sway to while hyped up on X?"

Maybe I should clarify myself a little...

I'm in the US at the moment and I've been to a couple of music stores and what struck me was stuff like trance departments with compilations CD's called techno-something that consisted of trance music. In fact, I'm listening at a compilation CD called "Techno Manger" right now, and the first track is pure eurodance. (not even trance - calling eurodance techno would be an outright insult to most European technolovers )
I've seen similar classification mixups with drum&bass, lounge and house.

Hence my idea that Americans have some problems in distuingishing the genres in electronic music.

(for the record, I haven't been to a lot of specialist stores, and I guess the situation is better in those)

I'd definetly be one of them....loud thumping bass is what I associate most club music with.....thats just from personal experience...and I don't care to know the differences, nor be educated on them..

Ah, you've got a point there, Colon. Blumchen isn't ANYTHING like ATB for example.

Any american that actually LISTENS to techno knows this. The problem is, that tpe of music isn't as popular in america, and so the stores don't really pay much attention to it.
