Is Homosexuality due to toxins in our environment? Remove this text

This seemed a bit far-fetched, but it is intriguing that some gender could actually be influenced by environmental components.

quote:
Can Prenatal Hormone Exposure Influence Gender-Identity Development? -- One Theory

A NARTH member recently sent us an intriguing comment by physician John R. Lee, M.D. Writing in What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause, John Lee, M.D. described the possible role of prenatal hormones in influencing the later gender identity of a developing fetus.

Speaking of xenobiotics---environmental pollutants which have a hormone-like effect on the body---Dr. Lee said that when a pregnant woman is exposed to such chemicals, they may blur sex differences in her unborn child. The resulting gender distortions, he theorized, could account for some instances of homosexuality when the child grows to adulthood.

Dr. Lee noted an earlier, similar finding: mothers who took the synthetic hormone DES during pregnancy were more likely to have daughters who developed vaginal and cervical cancer, and a higher-than-normal proportion also became bisexuals or lesbians.

Theorizing that environmental pollutants could have the same effect, he concluded, "If xenobiotics can blur the distinctions between the sexes in seagulls and alligators at nanogram levels, how far-fetched is it to speculate that the same pollutants may be affecting humans in the same fashion?"

After reading the first three paragraphs I pretty much thought the final paragraph. So probably, but not homosexuality, at least not any typical form of it.

Wouldn't gender identity be more related to transexuality rather than homosexuality? Or are they talking about gender identity of possible mates?

They could be a bit more clear...

Homosexuality and Transgenderism are not the same thing, and this guy seems to have totally confused the two.

I think they are saying that toxins in the environment screw people up and make them gay.

Doesn't really work in the case of identical (mirrored) twins where one is gay and the other is straight - fairly common, I hear.

The doctor is using very confusing terminology. Sexual identity and sexual orientation are two different things, but he is blurring them together.

The hormones may indeed have an effect on sexual identity, but I don't see any basis for saying it effects orientation.

It is an interesting twist on the "born gay" argument, in that is seems to say that yes, it is biological, but not heaven sent, rather, a result of using too much hairspray or Raid around the house.

Toxins screw people up, period. It may well screw up their gender identity, but if someone born a man lives as a woman, I would not consider them gay to be attracted to men.

Hmmm...I don't know...we can't deny that toxins have a serious biological effect. Gender blurring seems to be a pretty logical result.

I know there is something really wrong with San Francisco (maybe some hippies poisoned the water like thirty years ago) but normally I wouldn't tie toxins to transgenderism or anything like that.

It is one possible result, but it is not likely the major cause of homosexuality, since that has existed everywhere in all cultures at all times as far as we can tell.
