Did I have one or two warriors in there I don't remember.
Hmm I guess it's the games I play against the AI. Take the risk and use warriors use them for exploration, then build Settlers Defense isn't necessary before 2700 BC, cause u can always restart, if U lose a city.

Rick, i did see desert nearby, but why are you trekking in that direction anyway? I've playtested those settings dozens of times, and all three civs get rivers every time. Obviously the first player gets the best starting pozzie, but that's why you get a rematch with the starting positions reversed. All starting positions with these settings are quite good, with lots of rivers and trade goods. You should find it much easier than normal to crank up your production, meaning more war, sooner! 
Guess my soldiers will have to wear light-weight uniforms!
