Isnīt there bible studies in some of the more backwards states? Like the ones that forbid the teaching of the theory of evolution

We had a Bible as Literature class in my Highschool. It was voluntary, and we were supposed to look at different stories based on Biblical stories (such as Jesus Christ Superstar). But the year I was gonna take it, the teacher decided to stop the Jesus Christ Superstar part, because it was sacriligious. Grrrr.

That was the backwards state of Illinois in 1984.

Got spare money?

Well, I've learned the bible ( Old Testament ) when I studied in a religious school as a kid . They skipped the 'special' parts. When I studied bible in a secular school All was explain to us, and luckily the approach was not a theological one, but an analitic one , explaining to us the sources of the jewish monotheistic religion, etc.

Another job for the international ***** slap patrol: a desperately needed UN agency that would seek out cases of rampant stupidity and ***** slap the offender until they learn to shut their idiot mouths.

sorry, I just get so frustrated by the world sometimes...

I think the proper way to handle a sitiation like this would be for social services to take that poor kid away from her mom. If growing up in a living environment where stupidity and ignorance is encouraged isn;t child abuse, what is?

I dont' see the problem here so long as it's an analytical class. I wouldn't mind seeing a study on the Qu'ran, either, so long as it was done analytically (and voluntary).

What I would mind is a class where you can't say anything that might upset people who believe in that religion. If that's the case, then they can leave.

Che, you say Niger and Nigeria can't be used as offense by kids?

How about the following quoute, which could be very easily considered as an insult:

You are a Niger from Nigeria

Requiring the teacher to apologize and explain her mistake was definitely called for and necessary.

However, the teacher's action seemed to definitely have been an honest, ignorant mistake, and does not call for being fired.

Do you know how the words are pronounced? Niger sounds very little like nigger, whereas niggardly sounds almost exactly like nigger. Your example would be like trying to insult someone by calling them an azule.

Bullshit. The teacher didn't do anything wrong except expand the kids vocabulary. I don't think we should start censoring non-offensive word in the English language because some ignorant people don't know their meanings.

For pete's sake, the word doesn't mean anything except being stingy. Isn't it absurd to start striking words from the lexicon because they sort of sound like an offensive word?

Don't teach them the word "bunt!"

Ignorant? You're kidding, right? The ignorance was displayed by the person who complained. Ignorance is hardly a word to be used to describe someone who knows what they're talking about

You've just shown your own ignorance

I'm certainly offended by the mother's ignorance. Maybe I can sue her or something.

And I'm sure ignorant people pronounce Niger exactly like nigger despite the fact that Niger is not pronounced as such. Perhaps people like this kid's mother should send a letter to the country of Niger asking them to change their name in case it is mispronounced and offends someone.

Ignorance is not an excuse!

edit: Che pointed out that my previous argument didn't follow.

Spoken English is different from written English. If you mispronounce a word and use it the way you'd you another word that sounds exactly like what you're saying, you're actually saying the second word and not the first.

I should have learned by now that no matter how moronic the point of view, someone on Apolyton will support it.

'Niggardly' is a ancient norwegian word, imported to england by the vikings... 'nigger' comes from the river Niger, obviously more recent than the vikings (since the brits didn't know Niger existed until the 14'th century or so).

At least I think it is from the river, and not a bastardization of 'Negro'. Either way it is older.

One of the guys he was talking to was black and took offense. Some people called for him to be fired, and I think he wound up resigning. It was only 3-4 years ago, I think.

I seem to remember reading that the word "niggard" has Scandinavian roots, but it could be Middle English. Edit: I wrote this before I saw CyberGnu's post, which would seem to confirm the Scandinavian origin.

Well, when some black people have utterly moronic feelings, then perhaps they should own those feelings .

Reminds me of chemistry in highschool, where we were told to think of words starting with "bi". I think she was teaching us the word "bipolar". Anyway, we were given a warning to only think of appropriate words.

Speaking of which, I wonder what the parents view on the word "bicycle" is? Or bike? A certain minority group should most certainly be offended by these words!
