	Flags and Anthems Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

It's that time again!

We have left Earth. We have decided to continue the development of the United Nations of Earth on Planet. However, we must become an important trading partner to the world and continue to develop a strong identity of our own.

What better way to do such things than a flag and anthem? We must let all nations of this new planet know whom we are. Although we cannot locate these nations presently, I have the feeling we will very soon...

Flags will mark our vehicals and buildings. Our military officers will wear their flags on their uniforms, and citizens everywhere will wave the flag proudly, displaying patriotism not only to the Peacekeeping Faction but the United Nations and its ideals: Peace, Love, Happiness.

An anthem would allow us to inspire our citizens hearts at international events, victories over our enemies, or an internal event such as a game. It would also allow us to pass on our history to our children without boring them with details of our past. And our citizens will increase in knowledge. Anthems have been scientifically proven to be loved and cherished by all intellects of the world. They shall flock to us if we have an anthem.

So I call on all of you: Develop an anthem! Develop a flag! Make our nation strong and proud!

I suggest we keep the UN flag as ours, and choose The International (United Nations, remember ? ) as our anthem, or maybe the vocals of Beethoven 9th Symphony :Alle Menschen Bruden werden...

What is the name of our nation, anyway? I was looking at some anthems and most seem to incorporate the name of the subject country into the rhyme and meter of the song.

(and I checked, the UN has no official anthem - though there is an old resolution authorising one so we're on safe ground assuming that the peacekeepers would adopt one - if anyone has the music for Benjamin Britten's "Voices for Today" we might be able to use it, apparently that has been suggested by some)

And I vote "No" to the Internationale. The Paris Commune is hardly representative of the spirit of the United Nations. If anyone needs reminding of how vehemently some of our fellow Peacekeepers disagree with the class struggle expressed by that song, here are the lyrics in English:

How about the U.N flag, but instead of Earth we have Alpha Centauri on it, and make it dark red/brownish, like the terrain color, instead of blue.

The "Ode to Joy" sounds great in German but it seriously bites when translated into English. And all that "there must be a Creator in the heavens" stuff is a little too Sister Miriam for me.

Some years before the Unity launch, when visiting UN Headquarters in New York, I picked up a book of music entitled "Hymn to the United Nations."

I'll see if I can find it, as it might be just what we need for an anthem.

For the flag, I'd say the UN Peacekeeper's symbol, in white, on a Peacekeeper-purple background.
