What is the name of our nation, anyway? I was looking at some anthems and most seem to incorporate the name of the subject country into the rhyme and meter of the song.
(and I checked, the UN has no official anthem - though there is an old resolution authorising one so we're on safe ground assuming that the peacekeepers would adopt one - if anyone has the music for Benjamin Britten's "Voices for Today" we might be able to use it, apparently that has been suggested by some)

And I vote "No" to the Internationale. The Paris Commune is hardly representative of the spirit of the United Nations. If anyone needs reminding of how vehemently some of our fellow Peacekeepers disagree with the class struggle expressed by that song, here are the lyrics in English:
Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.
Chorus:
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.
No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot

The "Ode to Joy" sounds great in German but it seriously bites when translated into English. And all that "there must be a Creator in the heavens" stuff is a little too Sister Miriam for me.

| I agree with that.

| The french text is not as vehement : let me try to give you a translation.
Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.
Stand up, you damned of the earth
Stand up, you prisonners of hungers
Reason(rationality?) thunders
This is the eruption of the end
Lets wipe all the past out
Slaved crowd, stand up, stand up
The world will change of base
We are nothing, lets be everything
Chorus:
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
This is the final struggle
Lets gather and tomorrow
The International will unite the human race
No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
[I]There is no supreme savior
No God, nor Cesar, nor Governor
Workers (producers?) lets save ourselves
Lets decret the common salute

While on the topic of communist national songs, my favorite is East German national anthem, "Arisen from Ruins:"
Arisen from ruins
And turned toward the future,
Let us serve you well,
Germany, single fatherland.
Old distress calls for force,
And we force it united,
For we must succeed
In making the sun, beautiful as never before,
Rise over Germany.
Hmm, now that I actually read the translation, it seems a bit violent. Never mind...
I like the melody though.
