	Am I the only person here who hasn't read LOTR? Got spare money?

We're watching the movie in English class*. I noticed how most students seemed to understand the plot and knew all the characters. I asked why, and was mocked for not having read any of Tolkeins books. (This is a dumbed-down English class, BTW. There's only a few nerds, and they're math types like me.)

The only people who I could find who didn't read it were a few of my teammates. Anyone here as behind the times as me?

If you can manage to get past the first hundred pages or so, it's actually quite a good story. It just gets off to a very slow start.

I have to say that I found the plot lacking in many parts. The lack of plot twists hurt it.

No, you are not alone. I haven't read them either. Tried, but failed due to lack of interest. I got through the Hobbit and the first one (Fellowship of the Ring?), but decided not to waste my time on the following two books.

LOTR is just an ancient day GTA3. People read it because everyone else (seemingly) has read it, and most people like it because everyone else around them like it, but the game/books just aren't that great.

**** you Asher, GTA 3 is oodles of fun. When you're high. Otherwise you're right, it gets old really quick. So forget that **** you deal.

LOTR didn't really need plot twists. It was mostly about creating an entire world with its own history and cultures and whatnot. And all the cool people smoked mad amounts of "pipe-weed."

Star Wars is another great example. Mediocre filmmaking makes it big -- you too can make a craptastic film and make billions off of it.

Star Wars is overrated too.

No, I take that back. Star Wars is overrated. LOTR I haven't finished so I cannot make that determination. But SW is highly, highly overrated.

It really is a crappy film, and even worse science fiction.

The following two books are actually better than the Fellowship.

I liked the Silmarrillion better than LOTR though.

I read the books years ago, but my dad's just started reading them. He's halfway through the Two Towers right now--took him a month to get through Fellowship (kept falling asleep), and took him three days to get halfway through Two Towers.

Now that's good reading. Especially "The Innocents Abroad." Though his short stories are most entertaining.

Just because a book is long does not mean it is good. See "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" I literally passed out after the first few pages.

How he got into college, I'll never know.

I will not tolerate Hugo-bashing. He was one of the greatest novelists ever. PERIOD. No discussion permitted.

I read LOTR when I was in 8th grade, before it was trendy, and I loved it. I found it to be an extremely evocative book.

But I always beat the trends. I came out just before it became trendy, and I was a Titanic buff well before Cameron's schlockfest.

And shut up about SW, dammit. Must be a generational thing.

I've read LOTR a long, long time ago, but it didn't make much of an impression on me. Shortly before the "Fellowship" movie came out, I tried re-reading it. God, "Fellowship of the Ring" bored me out of my mind. I stopped after getting 3/4 or so through the book (I don't remember the last time I've stopped reading a novel before it was finished).

Yeah, I know that "Twin Towers" is supposed to be much more interesting, but the same people who say that believe "Fellowship" was a great book.
