Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

What operating system are you using. The Bink.dll thing is a problem for some with Windows NT.

Here are some things you can try. Read it all first. I added some ideas at the bottom.

First do uninstall from Add/remove in the control panel not from the disk if there is more than one Civ III entry then uninstall the patch first then the program. THEN after it stops as I suppose it will since it did before open Explorer and find the Civ III folder. Delete it. If you have any saves you want to keep copy them to someplace safe. You may also want to save the high score file.

Path for Civ III on my PC

C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III

This may be enough. However you should also find this folder

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information

You should be able to delete ALL the files in with no problems. If you are worried look in each folder. They all seem to have files named setup.ini, just open them in notepad. You can open notepad and drag them onto it. I have notepad in my sendto folder which is very convenient for opening the the things. The setup.ini file in the pertinent folder will say something like this:

[Startup]
FreeDiskSpace=0
AppName=Civilization III v1.29f
Engine=0
Copy=1
Source=0
[Languages]
Default=0x0009
count=1
key0=0x0009

That is from mine. Delete that folder that contains that file. It should be OK to delete all the files in the Install Shield folder but as I say if you are nervouse you might want to just delete the one. Better yet just move the whole folder to someplace safe. You can always move it back or delete it later.

If things are REALLY stubborn there is Regedit but unless you are used to it you probably shouldn't touch it. Delete the wrong thing and you will problems.

If I was you I would just do the Add/Remove then delete the Civ III folder and then try installing again. Make sure the disk is clean. If that works then install the 1.29f patch. If it doesn't then I would try deleting the Install shield stuff after running add/remove again.

If none of that works its then you have real problem. It doesn't sound like a SafeDisk II problem. It sounds like an install or an uninstall was seriously messed up and there is debris leftover.

So you might want to start with this BEFORE my other suggestions.

Run scandisk. If scandisk finds problems then its a good idea to reboot and run it again untill you get a clean bill of health. Then reboot and run Defrag. That may take a long time if you haven't run it in a while. Run it overnight. A fragmented disk has messed up many an install and Civ III takes a lot of space.

Then do all the unistall reinstall stuff.

Open Explorer.

Right click on the Drive

Select Properties.

Click on the tools tab

You then see both scan disk and defrag. If you didn't know where defrag was then its been a LONG TIME since the disc was defraged considering that Win 95 has been of the market for a long time.

Other problems you most likely have

Your drivers are almost certainly all obsolete

Windows 95 is obsolete but you can try to update it as much as can be done at Windows Update.

You should get Direct X 8.1. Civ III installs Direct X 8 but not 8.1 and 8.1 works better.

POST YOUR SPECS WHEN YOU ASK FOR TECHNICAL HELP.

Win 95 is seven years old man. Its time for an upgrade.

You do know that you need about 700 MEGABYTES of disk space to make a typical install of Civ III? Thats a lot of space on PC that still has Windows 95. Still most likely is formated with FAT 16 which only allows for 2 gigabyte partitions.

Please actually keep that in mind. It really helps a lot and if you don't have a big enough hard drive you are out of luck. Look at the specs on the side of the Civ III box. Make sure you at least meet them. You simply may not be able to run Civ III on the machine if it is as old as I suspect.

I have given you as much help as I can AT THE MOMENT since you have adamantly insisted on ignoring the following request each and every time it was made.

If you can't follow an instruction so simple then you won't be able to follow the tricky stuff.

I would like to help you. You are not doing your part. You even gave me wrong information when you said you had Windows 95 which wasted a lot of my time.

When you can manage to do your part go ahead and reply.

I assume you mean that Scan Disk stopped. Defrag will always stop on an error. Scan disk is supposed to fix it. Maybe you have Scan Disk set to just look and not fix. Keep running scan disk till you get a clean bill of health on the boot drive. Perhaps you need to run a full surface scan. Those take something on the order of forever so run surface scans overnight.

I will assume that means you have a Pentium II. Most of those are rather slow at best for Civ III. A PII 300 is minimum on the side of the box but I suppose it will run on something slower. 32 megs of ram is a minimum and that is exceedingly optimistic at best.

Windows NT and Windows 98 on the same machine is unusual. NT is old and not won't run Civ III at all.

How much space is left on the hard drive?

Did you REALLY remove the Civ III folder or did you just make a stab at it? If you removed it you can't run the add/remove anymore but since you you tried that allready it doesn't matter much anymore.

Make sure the Civ III disk is clean.

Not that it will matter much. If you machine is as old as I think Civ III is going to have a problem with the CD player anyway. Old CD players can't handle SafeDisk II in many cases.
