Defensive or cream the oposition?? Put an end to popups!

Do we want to be a civ that prides itself in trade rather than conquest? Or would will we flood the land masses with our great armies. I think that the initial game play will set the path but I would like to hear everyones opinion on how they would like to see the game played.

Personally I like to maximize city growth by building 3-4 settlers with the first cities and keeping them at a 1 or 2 pop sixe. Eventually the growth surpasses the cities ability to make seatlers and it starts hitting size three and four. At that point I usually have discovered monarchy and have 8-10 cities all connected with roads so I will start using the settlers to build more roadwork and irrigation so that the population can begin its great rise. Then i just build a new settler every few turns to keep up a good supply as I have others go out to start cities.By republic I usually have about 13 good cities and a couple pop 1 towns.

I would say that we expand quickly- only researching war techs: bypassing Pikemen by the usual manner

(Pikemen are worthless )

Found as many cities as we can... found at least 2 very far from the main city... hopefully off on some peninsula that can be well defended- then play defensive unless attacked

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Obviously in this game a large military will be crucial, how much city resources should we put into units, 1 of 3 shields, 1 of 5? With despo we have one unit for each pop and with monarchy three at no cost so obviously we will use that to our advantage. but in a city with 4 pop and 5 shield how do we decide when to build new units???

I ususally play a 20% strategy,
for every 5 shields produced one supports a military unit, that in addition to the "free" units usually gives me a nice army size, the problem is with human players we will need more muscle so I wonder if we whould increase the ratio???

I'm only a shaman, but I'd say we need a good amount of fortressess to house our units outside cities, especially if we want Democracy or Republic. Numbers; I've never played MP before, and I usually don't play military on SP so I have no idea.

My basic strategy plan Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

If 2 Settlers the build one city and explore with remaining set until city site two is found.

Build city, start warriors. Set warriors out to explore while first city builds another Settler. continue in this fasion of building watrrior-settler-city until we have about 8 good cities with tree or four settlers improveing land. then begin the work on a "real" military of Phlanx/ chariots or whatever. each city under monarcyhy will support 3 plus i propose to devote 20% of production to Military unit support. Once we go republic we may want to revise that but this will get us started with some good cities and a nice military structure.

In cases where city growth may not acomodate a quick settler production we should build Phlancx for defense and thus buying more time for that new citizen to join our ranks.

Little adjustment to Plan:

Build city
Build warrior - fortify
Build warrior - send exploring
Build settler - irrigate, roads and so on
Then Loop:
While there is no need for either military units or city improvements - build settlers for new cities.

Phalanxes will be built in edge cities close to enemies or possible hostility sources.

Or after a good while.

Sometimes build archers instead of phalanxes, for the option of quick counter attack. (3 attack bonus over the Phalanxes 1 attack).

Correct plan
Beware, a road near cities may be usefull, but irrigation if of no use before monarchy.
If we choose a defensive attitude, the Great Wall may be a good WoW but does it work in MP as in SP to force cease fire proposals ?

Probably Got spare money?

Probably, IE when the AI has it it says "we cannot continue the attacks against this Great Wall" or whatever.
