Only if there was an outside threat which would cause us to 'other' them.

It's like when I went to Senegal with a couple of Spanish people. The African culture was so different it caused me to think of the Spanish guys and us as all being European.

It would be a similar thing with extraterrestrials.

I think it'll happen, yes. We're already seeing the first signs of it, IMO....by creating "superblocks" of economic union, we disadvantage those nations that are not already part of a union.

This will cause an acceleration of that trend, and we can expect to see more and more such groups forming.

Eventually, this will lead to the formation of "UberGroups" (combining two or more of the big econogroups into ever-larger groups).

With economic binding in place, it's a short step to political binding. One might even argue that the two are, essentially, one and the same.

The ultimate expression of this then, is one unified economic system. Maximum efficiency.

Probably not in my lifetime, but we'll get there....

Humanity will unite once the genetic engineering has ridded the human genome of selfishness, hatred, and such things like that. Of course, these traits are probably very closely linked with passion, individualism, and all the fun traits of humanity.

The product is a group of people like in Brave New World, but hey, we WILL be united....

Whats te definition of unite? Under a single political Hegemony? Probably, though in a long time. Under a single culture? Perhaps, in a much much loger time.

Will we ever get rid of the notion of 'other', a group of human different and distinct from 'us' [seperating this from the 'you' and 'me' dichonomy] ? No, that type of unity, when everyone is seen simply as another human individual, part of the same fundamental and thus single group, will never happen.
