Tired of ads?

There are a lot of ideas circulating about boreholes. May I suggest this thread to write them down in a compact system.

I would be rather careful with building extensive industry at now. We should depend mainly on forests, I think. Places for boreholes should be chosen with great care, to avoid messing with ecological harmony of the Planet. Do not repeat the mistakes of Earth!

Director Maniac, digging a borehole in Centauri's ground is wounding severly the Planet in order to get energy from its very blood and flesh. This is totally different to put solars all over the planet.
Make sure you remember that when you'll give the order to build a borehole.

Well yes, this is why I'd like people to discuss the borehole issue in this thread, so that the local residents of the Centauri Preserve can give decent counterweight to the Industrialists, with a sparkling interesting discussion as a consequence.

That's the theory at least.

So get started people! Without some concrete borehole or anti-borehole proposal, I'll probably just build forest about everywhere on rolling & arid (based on the preliminary poll tendencies), and a borehole will be a rare instead of a regular terraformation choice.

Seriously, I think boreholes should be rather rare improvement. Ecodamage really hurts, and in addition building a single borehole takes ages, so we should think about'em rather later. I suggest giving them up at the moment, building one, maybe two per base after a while, and building many of them outside bases (only for crawling) after a second while.

Maniac, when you don't know what to plant, plant forest.

Ow, and what do you guys think about energy park?

About the boreholes: They take quite a while to build and are quite limited in where they can be built, so we probably won't end up building too many, but it would probably be a good idea to make sure we had at least a few units of forest to counter their ecodamage.

I agree with what Kirov's said, boreholes should be used sparingly. Although they help if we want to build one base as a mineral powerhouse to build secret projects and the like.

When in doubt, plant forest!

Another voice in favor of lots of forest and tree farms! But we do need to consider borehole construction for at least a few bases now. Our energy needs are great and will only increase. The sooner we position some boreholes and begin construction, the likelier it will be that they'll be complete when the energy and mineral restrictions are lifted.

Finally, while I agree that rampant ecodamage is to be avoided, we need to have a fungal bloom in order to gain the planet-calming effects of tree farms.

I planned one condenser in my new terraform orders, near Tacticus Academy. Any other spots where I could build those (or boreholes), or should I keep with forests for now?

I personally get the best of the both worlds, build forests everywhere, then build genejack factories, robot facilites, tree farms, etc., while having 1 or 2 bases build nothing buit preserves over and over again, giving me a crapload of minerals and energy without any eco damage

There's no need of waiting for tree farms, IMHO. But we can build a borehole outside base tiles and crawl mins, or energy in case of ecodamage. I don't think that the very existence of boreholes is really harmful to Planet, but rather the ruthless exploitation of resources.

Well, the mere existence of boreholes causes ecodamage, but then again so does the existence of most other improvements. It's just a stronger effect.

IIRC, boreholes outside base tiles don't increase ecodamage, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, if you _crawl_ from borehole, then switching from mins to energy is often the neat way to decrease ED much.

Boreholes require too much terraforming effort to only crawl in half their output. At this point, why not just dig lots of mines on rocky squaes for those minerals and crawl them in. Much faster. Once we start researching env econ, bringing us unrestricted energy and tree farms, THEN start thinking boreholes. Even though they will increase ecodamage, put them inside base radii so that their full potential can be realized. The farms and occasional fungal bloom will soon relax the ecodamage.

Good. Now propose locations to put them. Then I'll poll them.

Without reactions, I'll have a look at the map myself, but that will be somewhere in the weekend then.
