Well, it's a bit different - try and take into account the sensibilities of the different people who might play Call To Power. Hitler and Mussolini may be the "best known" leaders of their respective countries, but the German and Italian peoples, especially the younger generations, have taken great strides to distance themselves from the events of fifty years ago and it seems slightly tasteless to use these images in the name of entertainment. Maybe in a hundred year's time it will seem less pertinent (hence Napoleon, with whom I'd imagine few people have a problem). Genghis Khan and ancient leaders also are not an issue.
Mao, being responsible for untold millions of deaths, is a very sore point indeed. I'd imagine that it's only the lack of Chinese players of CTP which mean that this hasn't been mentioned before!
It's all a matter of historical perspective really. IMHO, if a leader can be considered in any way "current" or "recent" (ie news rather than history) then they shouldn't be used. The after-effects of Hitler, Mussolini et al are still being felt.

Isn't CTP a computer game! Which is about Empires of different civ, some at war with each other - therefor wouldn't it make sense to have some warmongering *******s as leaders. Is there any point of ONLY having a peace loving pacifist a leaders of ALL the civs. Besides when has CTP ever been about real life politics and real life political correctness.

Grand Master, I think you've answered the question yourself there. CTP isn't about politics, it's about history, and the closer the leaders get to the present day the more political the game becomes.
Pacifists would be dull and unrealistic, but why run the risk of upsetting people (and Civ seems to be played by many, many nationalities) when it's really not that big an issue?
Keep Civ historical (at least 100 years) - I feel it's more in keeping with the spirit of the game anyway.

My only problem with Harlan's leaders is that he uses mythological personages when an historical one is not known, or not "important" enough. Moses, Manco Capec, and Hunahpu are all examples of this. The most important thing to remember is that if you don't like the leader he chose, choose your own. Shoot, I remade all of the pics myself. (Not that yours weren't excellent, Harlan!)

Hi,
Sorry for the slow reply on this, but I'm on the road now and only occasionally able to check the web. Here was my thinking about "evil leaders". Personally, I was more interested in finding the most famous person. Time magazine's famous "Man of the Year" award for instance has chosen such people as Hitler in past years, because they were important, not because they were making any moral judgments about the person.
But all that aside, the main reason I chose the people I did was because those were the ones I could find good pictures for! With the resources I had at hand, I was more likely to be hit by a meteor than find a quality picture of Garabaldi. Keep in mind that for my standards, it needs to be in color, look fairly realistic (as opposed to an artistic painting or statue), be roughly the right size, have the head facing the correct angle, and be a computer graphic I can edit. If you can find such a picture for Garabaldi that meets my standards and you're willing to crop it and place it over the standard background image and so on, I will be more than happy to include it in future versions. It could be the alternate Italian leader, just like how Germany has both Hitler and Bismarck. It could even become the default and make Mussolini the alternate if more people want it that way.
If people want to add any other leader pics as alternates or new defaults, I say more power to you. The only thing I ask is that the appearance of it pass my okay first, so that there be a certain standard of quality and a consistency of look. I myself though am not likely to make any more leader pics, as I feel satisfied enough with what I've done already.
Certain countries weren't included because of a lack of even one good picture for a leader. For instance I looked high and low for a picture of Trudeau so I could include Canada, scouring internet search engines and such, and couldn't find even one that fit my requirements (I think I found one good one, but the head was facing to the side instead of to the front). At that time I posted messages for other people here to send me graphics, but the response was pretty low (though I did get the Bismarck and one or two others that way). I also would be happy to see replacements for the Mayans, Incans and Jews and others as well, but in those cases I consider myself damn lucky to find any pictures at all. If someone has some good books and a color scanner, maybe they can help out. And John, if you remade all the pictures already, what are you hiding them for? Why not show what you've got.

that's because it only had 2 votes and one of the two was mean... now it has 3...
still, you should also see that it's a 1.5mb file and it has 750 downloads in 11 days...
and you graphics mod has more than 2700 downloads.
people do apreciate your work Harlan!
in fact, your 6 files in the database have a total of over 4500 downloads!

Harlan & group --
I'll be uploading my pics and civs when I can perfect them, and if anyone's interested. I am presently having a problem whereby three of my civs' leader pics are not showing up, but are instead greenish static. Have you run into a similar problem, and if so how did you circumvent it?
My pics are actually photos of contemporary works of art showing the leader -- a statue of Thutmose III, a photo of Hitler, a painting of Jefferson. If you folks are interested --Holler!

I'm I getting the wrong idea but it seem to me that people think Hitler wasn't that bad because he didn't kill as many people as Mao - that argument is completely stupid! Anyway 1940 Britain stood alone. The USA didn't want to get involved in a foreign war and at that time and Russia was still technically allies with the Nazis, so if Britain would have be conquered Germany could have made a European super state which would have had the power to invade Asia and the USA who at the time were not much of a world power. So than think to yourselves how many people would have die at Hitler's hands considering he killed off many of the Jews, Gypsies and many other ethic groups, and do you think he would have stopped there, he probably would have killed anyone who was not of the "Aryan Race". So that would mean if you didn't have blonde hair and blue eyes maybe you would have been sent to a death camp. Now tell me Hitler wasn't that Evil!

Grand Master, I don't think anyone's arguing that Hitler "isn't that bad" - everyone seems to accept that he was thoroughly evil! I think people were just pointing out that it's easy to overlook Mao, who was as bad if not worse. When you're talking about atrocities on the scale committed by these two gentlemen, it's impossible to rank one as being "more" evil than the other.
Harlan, my personal preference would be to have the "safe" option as the default, whether it be Garibaldi, Bismarck or whoever, and clear instructions on how to change this choice if people wish to. That's only a personal preference though and I know other people here will disagree. Should we have a vote, or leave it to your discretion?

As far as leaders go, you can pick who you want. First, this is a game, second we're covering thousands of years, past and future,
you can have any diplomat photo you want, the diplomats are not the leaders. Who has any idea of who famous diplomats were, or what they looked like.
For instance, using the techniques that Harlan taught, I took a scanned photo of myself, pasted the American flag in the background, and went into the civ_str to make myself the default leader of the U.S. I didn't like the picture of Moses in Harlan's mod, so I found a good one of Charlton Heston from the "Ten Commandments" and pasted in the tablets in the background. For the Thai leader, I used Yul Bryner, "The King of Siam". I think Catherine Zeta Jones is a knockout, so, from "Mask of Zorro", I used her as the Mexican diplomat. Oh, and I got a photo of Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, etc, etc. Think of famous movie roles, costume shots and on and on. They all look and work great.

I know, just like Yul Bryner was Russian not Thai, formerly known as Siamese, nor Elizabeth Taylor Egyptian. But I am looking for good color photos of attractive people in traditional costumes, which seem to be found through the Hollywood connection.
