People need to stop pretending that they're prudes, and lighten the f*ck up.

Sexuality, no matter what sexual orientation you are, has been source for tons of jokes.

If you joke around with friends about sex in general, that is fine by me -- I have a few friends like that, and I can be like that sometimes too.

If you constantly brag about how many people you have gotten laid with, you are being obnoxious, no matter what your sexual orientation is.

As for flamoyant homosexuals -- they do not represent all homosexuals, since no individual homosexual or specific sub-group of homosexuals can represent all other individuals.

I don't think that was his point--it wasn't about stereotyping homosexuals based on this behavior.

Still, I see nothing wrong with flamboyantly gay men. It's not my style, but if that's how they are, it doesn't hurt me in any way. Sometimes the most flamboyant types can be the most fun. As I said, as long as they aren't hurting someone else, who cares?

They are generally really funny and entertaining, and when I'm working with them time passes fast enough.

People who advertise how many people they have slept with are sad though.

It's much more like that in China. More than once I have inadvertantly picked up a straight guy on the subway or sidewalk, gone to dinner together, returned back to my apartment, ended up in bed together, only to discover later that the guy really wasn't gay, or even "bisexual" as westerners use the term.

Here, sexuality for many guys is more a matter of situation than orientation. In other words, a guy who really digs women may not be at all inhibited, under the right circumstances, in getting it on with a guy, even though he would not normally seek out such a thing.

This also explains why until very recently, there was no word in the Chinese language for "gay". For most of Chinese history, male-male love and sex was not frowned upon. For example, if you had a handsome servant, you were not "gay" if you had sex with him. It was a matter of situation and opportunity, not orientation.

A side effect of this is that straight guys here are much more physically intimate in public. You see lots of young guys (say, under 30) walking while holding hands, cuddling together on the subway, embracing each other, stroking each other's arms or hair. Even adult men can be seen holding each other, or walking hand in hand.

It's really refreshing to see this, it seems so much more human than the artifical machismo-driven western standards of behavior.

The situation seems to be much the same for women, although here I lack an insiders perspective.

Let me try to get back on topic: I haven't seen much of cat-calling here, by males or females - not even from construction workers!

I assure you no coercion need be required. This has happened to me twice, and almost happened several other times. In neither case did I even realize the guy was not gay until much later. I think Chinese sexuality is closer to what Boris was referring to, i.e. more "natural".
