It's much more like that in China. More than once I have inadvertantly picked up a straight guy on the subway or sidewalk, gone to dinner together, returned back to my apartment, ended up in bed together, only to discover later that the guy really wasn't gay, or even "bisexual" as westerners use the term.
Here, sexuality for many guys is more a matter of situation than orientation. In other words, a guy who really digs women may not be at all inhibited, under the right circumstances, in getting it on with a guy, even though he would not normally seek out such a thing.
This also explains why until very recently, there was no word in the Chinese language for "gay". For most of Chinese history, male-male love and sex was not frowned upon. For example, if you had a handsome servant, you were not "gay" if you had sex with him. It was a matter of situation and opportunity, not orientation.
A side effect of this is that straight guys here are much more physically intimate in public. You see lots of young guys (say, under 30) walking while holding hands, cuddling together on the subway, embracing each other, stroking each other's arms or hair. Even adult men can be seen holding each other, or walking hand in hand.
It's really refreshing to see this, it seems so much more human than the artifical machismo-driven western standards of behavior.
The situation seems to be much the same for women, although here I lack an insiders perspective.
Let me try to get back on topic: I haven't seen much of cat-calling here, by males or females - not even from construction workers! |
If this is all true, then it sounds interesting (theory about situation over orientation).
But this theory excludes men and women who are exclusively gay, and would never have sex with someone of the opposite gender, no matter the situation.

and excludes men and women who were exclusively hetero
if I was just interested in getting off, I would not mind if it was male or female
but since I am interested in making love to someone who I find physically attractive, I am only into females

There is this awful site called "The Bait Bus" or something like that wherein these group of people drive around in a van, find straight men on the street and manipulate them into, in front of a camera, having sex with another man. They would lure the marks into the van on the premise of being paid $1000 to have sex with one of the women in the van. Then they would pull the bait-and-switch and stipulate that the guy first has to have sex with the gay guy.
What's funny is that all of the men, especially the most "masculine" ones, cave in and, when in the act, are *very* into it and very aggressive about it. The awfulness comes afterwards, though--because they always trick the guy out of the van and speed off without paying. That is the terrible part.
One could argue that many of the men "deserve it," if they are willing to engage in sex with a total stranger on camera for money (many of the guys are married, engaged or have girlfriends, too). But it still really bothers me they do this. Seems to me to be inviting these guys to turn into gay-bashers or worse.
Long story short: I think anyone can bring themselves to have sex with either gender, given the right circumstances. |
I disagree
disregarding force (if you don't have sex with me I will blow this persons brains out) I will never get off with another man
in fact, disregarding the above stipulation, I will not get off with most women
your example of pay is wrong here because of the fact that people in the US are coerced using money all the time (We are all slaves to the almighty dollar), so it is not a good example
while I agree that there are many straight people (of both sexes) who get off with people of the same sex, I think it is because of the current culture of rampant hedonism
