From the RoN interview part 6, there are no governments. Though I don't see why that would make any difference in whether or not to play the game.

It creates an extra sense of atmosphere for me.

My main dislike with previous RTS games was the lack of governments, mainly because everything was so monotone. Governments create extra strategies, by penalizing certain aspects of your economy/empire. In EE, for example, none of that was there. You could follow similar AI strategies and win, no matter who you were, or what your economy was like. You could have just as well strictly built military-oriented structures throughout the entire game, with no penalties to morale or happiness to citizens.(Albeit, there was hardly any choice in the matter.) IMO, that sucks.

And is the only reason I still play TBS.

I hope Mr. Reynolds reconsiders, though I'm probably late in hoping for anything.

wtf's up with the university advances? Some of them are shaded in different colors. This looks pretty gay, but i think i would help if I understood what it meant. Are the ones not shaded in already researched? Or are the ones not shaded in are not yet researched? Is there an option to turn these colors off?

And by the resource bar, there are arrows, pointin up and to the side. Does this mean I can move the resource amount bar up to where it is in other RTS games?

Propaganda,

How would you like to see governments and happiness play out in a RTS? Remember, you do not have time to manuver bars around to make sure people are happy or time to turn food into trade and thus give more luxuries to your people. So make a proposal on how you would like to see this incorporated. I have a few ideas myself but am wondering how exactly you would like to see it play out.

is there an option that allows you to choose if you want the red marks that units behind buildings/trees make or not?

Mark,
Now you've had a chance to play a bit more, do you have comments on any of the following (that you couldn't speak about earlier):
* Does the AI honor it's alliances?
* How are aircraft? (And what is controlling them like?)

Thanks again! Apolyton's RON coverage is simply fantastic (and a pat on the back to ixnay as well ).

yes. i havent made many alliances but it never broke off

quote:

air units are very interesting and add a lot to the "need for strategy"(= the need to have some strategy and make some choices and not just click fast ) of the game
you've got fighters, bombers and helicopters
they are your front offence and defence.

example: in all my games i was more advanced by my opponents and victory was easy: send the bombers, let them level everything(they can be automated to bomb, return to refuel and return to continue bombing ) then send the troops knowing that the opponent can start producing more units(or at least at full capacity.
in my last game though, i had taken all but one ai and since i was not as fast, he had reached modern level and had everything. his last defence became... helicopters which where a) bringing down my bombers b) shooting up(or rather down since they were above them ) my troops as i wasnt used to build air-defence units
i should note that the ai had it's priorities straight: it knew that he should attack my air-defence towers first(in a city of his that i had captured and was trying to maintain) and also to rebuild his airports that i was bombing. air-defence units and helicopters from my side solved the issue

another note on control: fighters and bombers are not for situations that you need to act fast, as it takes some time to get them up and get them to the right spot. even when they are in the front, you cant give them fast orders in the sense that in order to hit the new target they have to move and turn just like an actual airplane...

Thanks Markos! Air units are one of the things I want to hear about the most -- I just love playing with them . I'm happy to hear you seem to like 'em too -- bodes well for the future .

If it's possible (if not, I totally understand) could you post some screenshots/description of how you control air units? I've seen different games do it different ways -- from hitting a key to select a type of unit which can be launched out of a hanger to having each unit 'visible' and selectable on the landing pad. I'm more interested in how you select one than how you control it -- I know EE's airplane-selection system drove me mad - it was nearly impossible to select an individual plane (or even a type of plane from a given region) without adding a ton of time to how long it takes. I'm praying that the RoN developers have come up with some nifty way of doing this .

I do quite like what you've described so far, however. It sounds like the AI has an air strategy beyond "build lots of bombers and rush", and understands the strategic importance of air. The information about bombers and fighters not being instant weapons is also encouraging, though it'll probably prevent a tactic I've used very successfully in the past -- order up the airplanes to protect against attacking troops. (In reality, that's probably not a bad thing )

Anyway, thanks for all the detail . Apolyton's coverage of RoN, again, is totally awsome -- I always wanted the game badly, but I think I may have to preorder now .

What difficulty level are you playing at Markos in order that the AI was faster but let you catch up? I am assuming that there are various degrees to the AI's difficulty? How good is it in pressing its advantages? It seems that it had a good strategy, it just didn't finish you, and I am wondering why that happened.

havent developed much strategy on that, except from leaving some spaces for units to have quicker routes(although the citizens dont move much when they work(e.g. when they are on a mine they are there at all times, they dont work/move iron back to a wharehouse or something and then return), and also building defences buildings(towers, castles, air-defence) since you dont have walls to cut everyone out and you could get an invasion in the heart of your nation easily

you can either give orders from the airport as well as on the field. selecting units on the field is easy just like you select ground units(actually you can select both ground and air units at the same time and group them), but above all thanks to the pause button(you can pause and do whatever you like(except recieve diplomatic responses))

quote:

it wasnt that i was behind in tech, i just wasnt using all the units i could
traditionaly(this includes all civ games) i have been mainly using ground units in my strategies. ron might be the first game to force me to use air units in order to win.

on the other hand, i should note that i havent seen the ai to take that kind of interest in sea units(of course we're 6 months before release... )

it depends on what stance you have. if it's one of the attack, pillage, etc they will be more likely to get out of formation.
