I personally prefer to possess an own continent ( standard/large map ) without any instrusion, but as you certanly know AI often put insignificant new cities just in the middle of the only clear space in your territoty.
Well,it's my life mission to " color " my continent with my own color,I hate to spot a strange color inside my land, don't you?

I let them be until I am ready to make a stab at "their" continent. On anything other than pangea maps (where this odd little rule is irrelevant) you need a common continent to trade workers. Depending how my economy\population control is going I often find it useful to be able to sell workers for up to 30gp. It's a good enough deal that I'll tolerate that city. But I look at it with burning eyes each and every turn.

Personally I don't mind when other civs place cities on my continent.
It is basically free cities for me, and it will make the AI concentrate on building military during the war, while you don't really need that many troops to defend your continent, usually you can manage with what you already have, troopswise

Additionally, if there are two from a given civ, you can probably declare war, capture the "local" foreign towns, and sue for peace without ever having to build an amphipious assault group.
With the added benefit of kicking them off "your" continent.
Of course, I usually play builder (warmonger more as I go up in difficulty) so I'm normally pretty assured of a culture flip, so they are, indeed, free cities.
