*Indicates a device that is compatible with DirectX(r) version 8.1or higher.

VIII - ADDITIONS
------------------------------
Additions:
* CTRL-U: This multiplayer only hotkey will cause all of your automated units to perform their automation. For example, goto, explore, etc., will all perform their automation before your turn is over.

Changes:
* The maintenance cost of the Stock Exchange is increased from 2 to 3.
* The operational range of the bomber has been increased from 6 to 8.
* The operational range of the stealth bomber has been increased from 8 to 12.
* Domestic advisor screen displays the names of cities in italics if that city's citizens are managed by the governor and to display it's production in italics if the city's production is managed by the governor.
* You can destroy through bombarding Airfields, Outposts and Radar Towers.
* Increased the Numidian Mercenary's defense attribute from 2 to 3.
* Increased the cost of the Berzerk from 6 to 7.
* Workers can no longer join starving cities.
* Increase Sipahi attack from 7 to 8 and its cost from 8 to 10.

INI Tweaks
* PlayIntro=0/1. If 0, intro movie is not played. This must be manually added to INI file to be used. The default is 1.

NOTE: Fresh water lakes are not a terrain type. They are composed of coastal tiles surrounded by land.
NOTE: If you fail a spy mission, you will automatically fail any spy mission against that same civilization for next 2-4 turns.
NOTE: Play the World includes numerous fan created scenarios. These are provided 'as-in' and you should contact the creators for any problems or questions you have regarding them.
NOTE: TBS Santa Cruz sound cards can cause some compatibility problems with Play the World.

MULTIPLAYER

NOTE: You cannot enable AI opponents in the Turnless multiplayer game mode.

NOTE: In multiplayer chat, you can bold your text by encasing it in "{" and "}" characters. You can also make it print in italics by encasing the text in "[" and "]" characters. If you want to print any of these formatting characters, you need to type the character twice (i.e. "[[" or "}}"). This will cause that character to be displayed in the chat window a single time.

Multiplayer Hosting Troubleshooting:

* If a player is behind a firewall, and they're attempting to host an internet game, it may be necessary to open specific ports that the game uses. These ports are:
6667 (IRC)
80 (HTTP)
27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
28900 (Master Server List Request)
29900 (GP Connection Manager)
29901 (GP Search Manager)
13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
6500 (incoming, UDP, default roomquery port)

* You cannot host an internet game behind a firewall that is using Network Address Translation (NAT).

Voice Chat Troubleshooting:

DirectVoice must be enabled on your machine by running the "Voice Test Wizard" (just once). You can do this directly from the and . Select from the tab. As a convenience, the game will launch this Wizard automatically when you select from the main menu if is non-zero.

For the curious, following are the compression codecs used and their bandwidths:
(0) ** DIRECT VOICE DISABLED **
(1) Voxware VR12 1.4 kbit/s
(2) Voxware SC03 3.2 kbit/s
(3) Voxware SC06 6.4 kbit/s
(4) TrueSpeech(TM) 8.6 kbit/s
(5) Microsoft GSM 13.0 kbit/s
(6) Microsoft ADPCM 32.8 kbit/s
(7) Microsoft PCM 64.0 kbit/s

Microphone Boost

Many sound cards have an option called "Microphone Boost" or "Mic Boost." This feature boosts the input volume so that weak input devices can produce stronger input. If you determine that the input level from a system is too low for your voice session, you can enable microphone boost.

To enable microphone boost

Display the recording mixer, as described in the previous section.
Enable the Advanced buttons on the mixer by choosing the Advanced command from the Options menu.
Click the microphone line's Advanced button to display the microphone's Advanced Controls dialog box.
Select the Microphone Boost check box.
If microphone boost makes your input too loud, you can use the same procedure to disable microphone boost. If your sound card does not support microphone boost, one or more of the following will be true.

The Advanced command on the recording mixer's Options menu will be unavailable.
The Advanced button in the recording mixer's microphone section will be unavailable.
The Microphone Boost check box on the Advanced Control dialog box will be unavailable.

End of ReadMe Excerpts.

Comments ----

From the Sys Requirements,
I seem to recall seeing 300 Mhz required, with 500 recommended (same as Civ III) but this now states 400.(and so does the box).

Oh well, time to play
