Apolyton Pack v1 - Readme and comments Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Finally

Apolyton Pack v1.0 is finally here
http://apolyton.net/cgi-bin/ctp/files/download.pl?id=86

Size: 4.3MB

here is the Readme

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
APOLYTON PACK V1.0 1/October/1999
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION
The Apolyton Pack combines the most popular modification packs and maps for Activision's Civilization Call to Power. Using the "scenario pack" feature of the 1.2 Patch, installation is now simplified, and default game files are not overwritten. Plus, the best fan created files are combined in one easy download.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
REQUIREMENTS

1) Activision Civilization: Call to Power
2) C:CTP Patch v1.2
3) "1.21 Hack"(optional but recommended)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTALLATION
Before installing the Apolyton Pack, we recommend that you install the "1.21 Hack" http://apolyton.net/cgi-bin/ctp/files/download.pl?id=75
It's a pretty "clean" file, we haven't seen it causing any problems, only solving For more about this see below

Step 1) If you're reading this, it means that you have run the installation program and extracted all the files to their right locations.
Step 2) Change the DebugSlic attribute to Yes in the userprofile.txt in the ..\ctp_program\ctp folder
You can ignore the installation instructions in the other readme files
Step 3) You're done! To use, open CTP, start a new single player game and press the Select Scenario button. From there you will see the Apolyton Pack choice and then the various choices for random and pre-made maps.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"SCENARIO PACK FEATURE" BUGS, SOLUTIONS AND ADDITIONAL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
There seems to be a couple bugs in the scenario pack feature.

1) TGA, GL FILES, NEW SOUNDS NOT WORKING UNDER SCENARIO FOLDER

a) If you dont use the "1.21 Hack", the TGA files will not work if they are under the scenario folder, causing the pack to not load and perhaps crash CTP. This is due to a bug in the new Scenario Pack feature of Patch 1.2

Solution: after installing the Apolyton Pack do the following file moves
scenarios\Apolyton\graphics\pictures\*.tga to ctp_data\default\graphics\pictures\

b) If you use the "1.21 Hack", you will have no problems with TGA files.

2) LOADING/SAVING BUG

a) The following apply if you DON'T use the "1.21 Hack":
In some cases, loading a saved game of a game which used the Apolyton Pack will not work correctly and might crash CTP. In these occassions the game does not save the information on if and what pack was used for that saved game. In the saved games that cause the problem you will see only one "loading bar" when you try to load it. In saved games which work you will see two(probably one for the pack and one for the saved game).
To understand what exactly is going on, if you have installed the Apolyton Pack follow these steps
a) start a new random map game with the apolyton pack(use the Dutch which have a new city style)
b) save it and exit(let's call it "savegame 1")
c) start ctp again and load it. everything works
d) play a turn, save it and quit("savegame 2")
e) start ctp, load "savegame 2" and it will not work
f) start ctp, start new game with the pack, load "savegame 2" and it WILL work
g) play a turn, save it and quit("savegame 3")
h) start ctp, load "savegame 3" and it wont work again!!

Solution A: Start a new random(not pre-made) map game with the pack and then load the saved game. This probably works cause when you load the game, the pack files are already loaded in ctp's memory. In the case of pre-made map games, loading a saved game normally, will not work always. The solution again is to start a new random map game and then load the saved game.

Solution B: Use the Multiplayer Game choice always. This means starting a new game from the Multiplayer choice(TCP/IP) and loading it from there. We have found that this solution is more simple and take less time than the first one. You are also able to choose the AI civs and change lots of rules that you can't with the Single Player choice.

Note on Hotseat/PBEM: Hotseat and PBEM games have the same problems as the Single Player ones. For these games, only Solution A applies.

b) If you have installed the "1.21 Hack", several things are changed:

Single Player, Random Map - everything fine
Single Player, Pre-made Map - problems continue, see the solutions above
PBEM Random Map - everything fine**
PBEM, Pre-made Map - problems continue
Hotseat, Random Map - everything fine
Hotseat, Pre-made Map - problems continue
Multiplayer, Random Map - everything fine(as before)
Multiplayer Pre-made Map - everything fine(as before)

As you can understand, things are fixed on random map games, and you'll have to follow the solutions described above to have everything working fine in the other cases. Of course, you can always overwrite the files in the default folders and solve all your problems at once, but this is against the original idea for the creation of the pack.

** You still can't properly load PBEM games using the official way (double-clicking on the saved game). However, you can load PBEM games if you put them in a subdirectory of the saves directory and load the game from the single player load screen. CTP will still recognize the game as a PBEM game and tell you to mail it to the next player when you end your turn even though you load it from the single player load screen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES, KNOWN ISSUES
1) With Harlan's mod included, if you choose the random map scenario, you will see the default civ names in the civ selection window. This happens as the pack's files have not been loaded yet. So, if you choose the Nigerians, you will actually play with the Austrians. However, if you start a new game, and then start another one, the pack will be already loaded and you will see the correct civ names
2) Starting locations: World 8: a few where changed to be more accurate; World 24: random ones; EastMed: Correct ones and two more civs added for a total of 8
3) Games started with previous versions of Apolyton Pack will probably not function correctly
4) The default folder to save pre-made map games is "Apolyt". You can always use another folder, but the default that will appear in the save game dialog box will be "Apolyt". This is part of the scenario pack feature as ctp reads the name with which the map was saved initially. For random map games the default folder name is as always the the name of the leader.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suffering from ads?

You want comments?

How about - phenomenal?

It's a great day for Civilization. The culmination of a lot of work by a lot of people. Surely this must now be the most modified game ever!

Please, please, please can we have an official 1.22 patch though? Just to sort out the few remaining problems...? It's a shame to leave a work of art unfinished!

Thankyou MarkG and everyone though, it's been a blast and I'm looking forward to starting a new game.

Do the aips work in the scenario folder? Mine didn't; I had to put them in the core directory.

Folks I have a problem with the Pack - when I try to run a "Apolyton naked" game, CTP shuts down with the message "Can't open ADVANCE_FUNDAMENTALISM in the string database".... What's wrong? I have the 1.21 Hack installed... The DebugSLIC I also set to "Yes" according to the readme - anything I have forgotten? Thanks in advance for any help!

Stanley99, if you have installed the 1.21 Hack properly you shouldn't have a problem with "naked" games. Anyway, read the readme above you

Stanley, your profile says you are austrian. This probably means that you have the german version of CTP. The Apolyton Pack installs all localized string files in the english directory. If you want to use the AP with the german version of CTP you should got to the ...\scenarios\apolyton directory. This has a subdirectory named english. If you rename it to german you should get all the new strings for the AP. If you also want the Great Library files you should also move all files from ...\ctp_data\english\gamedata\gl to ...\ctp_data\german\gamedata\gl. for ... you should fill in the directory where you installed CTP. If you do this you will get all the new AP strings and gl texts in english. A german and french version are being worked on, but I don't know how long it will take until they are finished and released.

I found it helped to blow CTP away and reinstall from scratch. Then apply the CTP v1.1 patch, the CTP v1.2 patch and then the Hacked 1.21a (second) patch. Start a new game from scratch with the pack, follow the readme and you should be okay. Also, make sure any other mods you apply are 1.2 complient.

While this sounds like a lot of work, I feel it is a necessary evil as 1.2 changes the fundamental way CTP works. It also gets rid of any modified files you overlooked.

Markos, is the hacked 1.21 patch in the download section the first or second patch? They both had the same name and file size.
Additionally, you can't install the second hack patch over the first hack patch as it looks for the original Activision 1.2 patch, thus requiring a reinstall.

Paul, thanks for the reply to Stanley. I didnt think of that...

skorpion59,
first of all, you can apply the 1.2 patch on the original version, you dont need to put the 1.1 first

the 1.21 hack we have in the database is the second version. and you should keep a copy of the pre-hack ctp.exe

Regarding the aips, you can check to see if the AI has built any of the units CD added to the game (Siege Engine or Horse Archer). If it hasn't, it's not using the modified aips.

I just started a game with the Apolyton Pack, and went to 1000 A.D. The AI never built a single one of the units added in CD's mod. This leaves me convinced that the AI is not reading the aidata files in the scenario folder. The Apolyton pack needs to be rearranged to fix this problem.

Yeah, Mark, I'm sure there would be problems. I've added a warning paragraph in my aip mod readme telling the user to backup the original files, as they will be overridden. You may have to do the same. If you continue to have the installation program place them in the scenario folder, you could tell the user to manually place them in the game directory. I think this is the simplest and best solution.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

It appears that the scenario feature was either rushed out incomplete, or was done by someone who didn't understand the game fully. I see a pattern developing with Activision regarding this. Anyone else agree?

Full PM-box? Change here!

Unfortunately I have to agree with WesW on this one - the scenario feature seems bugged to the point of unusability. With great regret I have just reinstalled CTP with all the original mods (CD, Harlan, PowerSlics etc) as the number of problems to overcome in patch 1.2 seems simply too great.

It's a really great shame. And many thanks to the anonymous CTPFan who tried hard to rectify problems in this unfinished patch.

Surely we must get a 1.3 patch? The game seems in a worse state with 1.2 than it did with 1.1.

Alright, so what do y'all recommend? Assuming I don't want to deal with the hassles of the 1.2 patch, should I just run the 1.1 patch and manually install the desired modpacks (CD's, Harlan's, SLIC, etc.)? Did the 1.2 patch do anything other than introduce scenario elements? Does the game ai use the new units if I don't bother with the 1.2 patch? Or are these issues still being worked out. I've taken a break from CTP for a bit, hoping these issues would be hammered out by Activision (ha!) and the tinkerers among us (bless you all for trying), but it doesn't seem like we've progressed very far. If I knew the first thing about program tinkering, I'd lend a hand, but all my attempts have ended poorly. So, some advice from the grizzled veterans - what's the best way to get things to run without the 1.2 patch, and the best way with the 1.2 patch. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

ajbera, the 1.2 patch also has bug correctios, pbem and hotseat, and various other improvements.
I would go with the 1.2 patch and the apolyton pack
as for the ai files, if you wont the ai to use the new units, you'll have to copy them to the default folders and accept that you may have problems on games with the default files(which means that you'll probably have to play with the pack only)

hope it helps

Yeah, you'll want to use the patch, and the hack. Make a copy of the original aidata folder, and stick it beside the Call-to-Power folder so you'll have it if you need it later. You will not be able to play default games, or other scenarios for that matter, once you replace the files, but switching them in and out doesn't take long.

Yes Wes, I agree. I've commented before that the 1.2 patch is a 'bone'. And I've predicted a xmas launching of a scenario CD from activision with yet another patch and scenario editor (at just $29.95!) *LMAO*.

But the Apolyton Pack is wonderful!! Yes, I had to move things around a bit.. oh well. But it brings the most coveted mods all together in one place.. (except a crack cd patch).

God bless you all!!

Will all the new units etc. be available? I am content to play the Apolyton scenerio and not use the default game. Have I done all that I need to do?

I am not having a problem. I probably should have been more clear, sorry. Some of the posts in this thread made it sound as if the new units may not be available. I was curious if there was any thing over and above what I had already done that would keep problems from arising?
I apologize for the vague post.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Oh in that case no i think you are done. Rename the "english" folder in your scenarios\Apolyton PAck\ to your language if you havent got the english version.

Try to start a new game and see if it works. If there are errors post here again. Probably in a new thread.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Storm, you need to take the aidata folder which is in the Apolyton scenario, and paste it over the original game's aidata folder. Otherwise, the AIs will not use the new units available with the Apolyton Pack, nor will they make several other changes to their behavior which will make them better competition.
