Huge vs Small maps Suffering from ads?

As with any Civ subject, I am sure this has been talked about before, but I would like to get a current feeling on this. I used to always play Civ on the big to huge worlds and always enjoyed it. But the later rounds always required too much micro management of the 30+ cities and the game began to drag.

Lately I have been playing on 80X80 worlds with about 14 civs, and it has been a ton of fun. Usually you can only expand freely to about 4-7 cities before running into neighbors and requires more diplomacy to keep from getting attacked on all sides by numerous civs bordering your lands.

Then with later rounds you dont have a million cities to worry about just your core 10-15 cities and the newer ones conquered or culturally swallowed. It makes the placement and development of each city all the more important. And the modern era micromanagement is much less. I play on the 2nd highest level and it provides a good challenge without having to play one game for 50+ hours.

Once the game is sufficiently patched, I would love to try this type of map with 1-4 humans and the rest computer players. That would be a blast.

Well, whatever floats your boat. I usually prefer the 2nd or 3rd largest maps. 30 cities would be an absolute minimum for me. I need more stuff to do and more units.

The smaller maps are only good for quick conquest wins which, for me, isn't the point of Civ.

Got spare money?

Well that is the beauty of the game, everyone can play the map size that they prefer.

Personally, I'm looking forward (not having gotten PTW yet... have to wait until this weekend due to a spousal consent issue...) to playing 24 civs on a huge map. Hopefully the additional 256mb of RAM I ordered will show up before I get the game!

I figured most civ addicts would want the huge map. But for those of you who havent tried a small map with 12+ civs, you should try it sometime. The fun of it might surprise you.

Well, I really love huge maps for their great atmosphere but it's true that they get boring after you entered the industrial times. Usually, I play on huge maps and restart in the middle of the industrial times. This way, I have the most fun, I think.

Me too. Once I get to Infantry, I usually end up starting a new game unless I've got a weak neighbor I can amuse myself conquering.

Perhaps the guerilla unit will mix things up a bit for me.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Seems like I'm the only one who prefers standard map size... For me, standard maps are not too cluttered but, at the same time, the game doesn't take ages to finish... it is a good compromise between fun and challenge.

Nah, I prefer standard too.

But a huge with 24 civs is pretty cool, especially with all random civs.

Increase Your PM Length

Hi. Just got PTW. First post here. Great site this is!! I have to say I love CIVIII and looking forward to MP on PTW. However, I wonder if anyone will be able to play on the net with a huge map. Or has anyone yet? I prefer huge map as a I am builder, but I might have to learn to play on smaller maps and sharpen my warmongering skills! LOL

Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

welcome to Apolyton, then! As for playing huge maps on the net, I think it is virtually impossible now, given the bugs in MP... but Firaxis said those problems will be sorted out in the next patch.
