Ideally duels start you on opposite ends of the map - it minimises the luck factor and leads to better games. 10 squares apart causes results based on pure luck. This needs to be fixed. That's all I have to say.

Again, I must reitorate (as proven in this thread) - that I don't bail out of matches, and therefore didn't bail out of yours. You seem full of sarcastic rhetoric as to why you won't play me, only underlining how sh*tty a player you truly are. Duel me now! In the eyes of everyone in this thread, don't prove a coward (ie.) NAH I DONT FINK ILL PLAY SUMONE WHO BAILS WHEN I BARELY DEFEND AGANST A WARRIOR HAR HAR!@#ed)
Seriously though, I can't believe the ol' pillaging warrior trick worked against someone. You need practise, or perhaps a new brain, champ.

This happens in larger games too. Some
players are doomed right from the start.
I think scenarios with equal starting
positions will be best for multiplayer.
A good example for a bad starting
position was germany in my last match.
They were in the bottom right of the map
with no special resources and mostly
tundra and forrest fields. Expansion was
also impossible because the koreans
blocked the access to the rest of the
continent.

The logic for assigning starting positions must be fixed in order for MP to be a good experience for all, otherwise, the ratio of games quit in the first 5 min. will be extremely high.
I think every square in the immediate vicinity (2 sq radius) of each player should be given a point valu, based primarily on how it helps you expand or develop resources, and the point value for every player should be equal. For example - grass with shields might be 1 point, tiles adjoining river might be 1/2 point each, luxuries 2 points, horses 1 point, wheat 2 points, cows 3 points, jungle -.5 points etc.
I played a game yesterday evening as Ottomans right next to Egypt, my starting position was average - but not on a river or extra food tile, and found myself completely boxed-in by my human opponent by 1600BC, no thanks to all of the lovely cows nearby his capital.
