Preferred government benefits? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Quick question, in the manual it states which government is preferred by a civilization and which is shunned. Are there any benefits for staying in the preferred government? Can you just play with the government you like and not be hurt by this? I am playing with the Vikings and I am in a Monarchy (the preferred) but would rather be in a communism. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not sure, but I think the preferred government only referrs to which one is preferred by the AI, when it plays the specific civ - but as I said: Just a guess (allthough I think it's very likely to closely apply...)

I have read that it affect the relationships with other civs. If you are a shunned government, it will be less hospitable towards you. I do not really know if that is the case.

The governments are balanced so that for instance a communist regime is less charitable to capitalist, Facist is less charitable to Monarchy etc. So if you switch to facist and monarch is next door they are automatically more hostile.

AI will prefer to play/aim for its preferred government type for a civilization so USA will mostly play for capitalist types.China for communist types etc.

The government along with cultural differences can probably trigger a war on its own without provocation by either side.

Tired of ads?

It seems to me like a (human) Civ is punished when it's in it's shunned Gov. and rewarded in it's prefered Gov.

I'm currently playing Vikings and switched from Monarchy(prefered) to Republic(shunned): Wow! - Massive Corruption - more than usual for republic - I think.

Anyone else notice this - or am I off my rocker??

No offence, but it seems to me like you either need some help with your English or you've been playing too much CTP2.

@Sanuk: I never realized anything like that - and I guess it would be mentioned in the manual or civilopedia...

@Bambul: Maybe it's because I'm not a native speaker, but what's wrong with his english?

I think he was referring to the example of "fascist" or "capitalist" government, which are as it seems present in CtP, but are certainly not present in Civ3.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

The help function makes the fantastic claim that the preferred and shunned govs influence the AI to "switch as soon as available" and "avoid at all costs." This is not true. You will frequently see China or Russia in Democracy, for instance. The principal function of the gov types is an AI "attitude adjustment" -- if you (the human player) are in an AI's "preferred" government, you will enjoy a slightly more positive AI attitude towards you; if you are in an AI's "shunned" government, you will enjoy a more negative attitude.

Can't remember where I saw the original explanation, but I'm pretty sure it was a Firaxian post here or at CFC.

I do play CTP2 as much as CIVIII. I can mod CTP2 using the simple text files and this is fun. For CIVIII I do not mod at all just use the out of box/patched versions.

I do not see anything wrong with this. My posts are a reflection of what I observe or perceive to be the case.

My English is fine in England Bambul, it is not Australian English which you might understand better.
