For A Good Hearty Challenge Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Okay, lately I've been playing Monarch since I hate AI cheating (been quite a while since I played Emperor or Deity), but lately have found it far too easy. I'll find a juicy city I want, then suddenly find myself taking over half their empire and completely altering the balance of power.

For example, last game played on a world map I was the Ottomans. Romans declared war on me, they sent two archers to attack, I beat them off. They surrendered (), and I ended up with a city in Rome with Rome a minor state for the rest of the game. Then Germany declared war on me (who was also at war with France... and pounded on them quite well), and I destroyed one of their cities, took another in Denmark, and subjugated them for the rest of the game (both wars ended before 1000 BC ). So in turn I as the Ottomans, the Russians and the Egyptians became powerhouses. I declared war on Russia (who was quite strong), and basically marched my way up to Moscow (I was defeated in the following battle, but that's not the point... I didn't bring along enough Knights ). That's the point I'm currently at... big bridgehead in Russian territory with some healing Knights as their (3 ) Phalanx units close in.

Okay, anyways. What I'm wondering is what's a good level for a good hearty challenge against the AI? Monarch just ain't cutting it (sending meager forces I easily beat Rome, Germany, Babylon, Persia, Babylon again, France and then Russia), and I'm going to try either Emperor or Deity for a more challenging game. I'm thinking Emperor, since at Deity you basically have to use every AI exploit to win, while Emperor is a bit more laid back of a game.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

One definite thing about playing the AI on emperor is that it's a bad idea to start next to one. Then again, this was the world map game as rome, so actually I started next to three.

France and the Ottomans declared war. I had focused on a couple Spearmen per ciy, but their sheer numbers overwhelmed me and by 1000 BC my entire country (4 cities) had been overrun.

Oh well, I'll know to give the Ottomans that 24 gold next time.
