For the same game with the bugs fixed i would get Apolyton Pack.
For a totally diferent game get Craddle of Civilization Mod if you like ancient age. Or World at Wat, if you like to play in the 1900's(this mod cuts the ancient age completely).
MedMod 2 is also a good choice. Changes all ages but it is a little out of date since his creator has left apolyton. So i would go to the others two mainly.

Basically you ought to try 'em all
But yes, Apolyton Pack is probably the best place to start: it's got a decent AI and provides an interesting game, "the way it was meant to be".
Then, if you want an (even) better AI and a (very much) fleshed out ancient game, go for Cradle. For a quick gamestart and a 20th century tech tree, go for World at War! and for just an overall much improved game with more units, advances, etc in all ages, and a good economic system, go for the (slightly older but still interesting) MedMod. For all these mods (except WAW!), Martin's GoodMod can be added to provide you with a few nice extra (trade goods, AI improvements, etc).

I'm also about to give CTP2 another try; which Mods work in mulitplayer? Do some work better than others?
