I am attempting to generate a list of Civ3 PTW players that have been successful in playing online. 52 to date
The following 52 Civers have successfully played PTW online without any major difficulties. When a game is played with any of the following Civers ask any of them to add you to the list or track me down in the game room and tell me your name and the person that you played on the list. After I verify that it is authentic I will be glad to add you to the list. I am attempting to avoid as many crashes as possible not eliminate anyone from enjoying the game.
The new 1.14f patch has cleared up many of the problems that were encountered in the 1.04f patch. There is a dramatic improvement in game flow. If you are in the setup room and see any of the following Civers you can be assured that they have played in or hosted a game with other like Civers. So, look out for them and maybe, we can avoid as many problems as possible in the future.
Please have, CivIII with the 1.29f patch (included in the Game of the Year disk), a retail copy of PTW with the 1.14f patch and enter the setup room through the PTW disk ( not gamespy) , if you're behind a router try the following: initial incoming TCP port 47624, outgoing and incoming TCP and UDP ports range from 2300-2400 (omission in read me). This is necessary to host not to play. There also seems to be a problem with AOL users. Turn off all programs that are running in the background except systray and explorer. If you crash for any reason do yourself a favor and reboot every time. To make the game run smoother: turn off all animations and music from the main menu of PTW before entering the lobby. It has also been suggested that some type of internet cleaner (ad-aware, sysbot cleanser) should be used to help the out of sync crashes you may get. Check out download.com (utilities) for available free downloads.
Last but not least, if 1 player is not 100% then the game will fail. Please help anyone that you can with these requirements (to get the word out), you can use this as your "good deed" for the day and possibly make a fellow Civer, a "Happy Civer".
As a final hint, if you are attempting to play with multiple players and you have continual crashes, try pairing off and run a quick test game. This is the only way that I have come up with to see which Civer may be the cause.
If you have any questions or suggestions let me know so I can pass it on.
HAPPY CIVING:

I successfully played with 2 sets of two people for an hour each time
the first two were Mad Vike and Paris
the second two were Lucky Dragon and Lord Wraith
both games I joined, the game I tried to host with 6 people didn't work

ajerzguy,
I am european so can not play yet. Hopefully tomorrow.
In your first post you mention that for CIVIII the 1.29 patch is needed? Because of the problems we Europeans had I reinstalled several times and thought that CIVIII, PTW and 1.14f PTW patch would be sufficient and would also ensure the 1.29 patch updates. That is not true?
Edit: To be sure I checked the PTW editor and checked some of the 1.29f editor changes. As expected they are all in there so I conclude that it is not necessary to patch CIVIII to 1.29f. Or am I missing something here?
