I had an experience in recent MP game where another human player attacked a city w/a warrior in regular game and took the city. I eventually took the city back, hooked up my iron and went after him w/an elite sword (got help from barbs to make elite). My question is, do we attempted some kind of early rush and how likely is it that another human will try that against us. I'm asking this since since we have to make a decision of how much we will guard our early cities and how we balance unit/settler production so we can expand with potentially exposing ourselves to much.

That's an excellent question for whomever becomes the defence minister and also whomever becomes the minister of the interior. My personal opinion is one good defencive unit per city, with response groups on the parimeter. This frees up resources, while allowing you to defend outlying cities. Also, I generally build a military unit between building settlers.

I think that we definitly need to keep at least one decent defensive unit in all our cities. I have a feeling some people will attempt early rushes, they have been successful for me against both AI and at least one Person.

I always leave one defensive unit in all of my cities. I even leave a couple offensive units on border towns...fighting the AI on harder settings has taught me to respect surprise attacks.

I always keep at least one defensive unit my my cities, unless I know no other human players are around and there's no barbs because I never know when a human player will decide to simply walk in to an undefended city.
