Happy Faces?!?!?! Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I have a question... not sure if its a bug... but here goes:

I've got a city with population 12. Level Monarch.

Happiness Improvements: Temple / Colossium / Cathedral

Wonders: Hanging Gardens

Laxuary Resources: Silk, Incense

Government: Monarchy

Garrison: 1 Pikeman, 1 Spearman

Entertainment Level: 0%

Now the problem is that for some reason the city has 5 happy citizens even though it should only have 2. Is there something I'm missing or is there a major logic bug?

Also if anyone is having the same problem please post.

Thanks in advance.

Tired of ads?

Do you have a market place and some lux resources? If so that will do it, depending on how many luxs are available.

Has another Civ declared war or done a sneak attack recently? This results in extra happy faces.

I presume you are familiar with War Weariness? If another Civ declares war on you and/or launches a sneak attack, it causes War Weariness in reverse, that is, it makes people happier. This might explain the three extra happy faces you're seeing.

Yup. Three in the city it's built in, and one everywhere else on that continent.

Put an end to popups!

Hanging Gardens and any other wonders or improvements only add content people, not happy. Luxuries, luxury rate, and entertainers are the only things that can make a person truely 'happy'.

I just ran a test in the debug mode and added the Hanging Gardens and all those other improvements to a city, yet still had 0 happy people.

I bet you had some entertainers in the city.

It's only content? I though it was happy, and the Oracle and Shakespeare, in particular, was content. Hrm.

The Hanging Gardens makes three content people happy in the city where it is built and one other in all other cities including those on other continents/islands.

Ruski if you had two happy citizens prior to building the Hanging Gardens then you would gain an extra three happy faces converted from contented upon completion.

I can only assume you built this wonder in the city in question where you have the five happy faces. If you check your manual or the in game civilopedia you can see for yourself the effects of all great and small wonders.

Well as far as I recall, Civilopidea says that the Hanging Gardens gives 3 content citizens in the city its build in and 2 in all other cities, not happy but contect.

But I will double check!

Then how come when I was in the debug mode and put every single wonder and every single improvement into a city (size 1), that 1 person was only content?(which should be happy with all the improvements and wonders in the city).

Wonders, improvements, and Military police will give you a ton of content people, but luxuries (marketplace helps too with 3 or more luxuries), luxury rate and entertainers are the only things that can convert content people to happy. And maybe this reverse war-weariness thing, not sure...

I've observed this in-game many times, so I have no doubt that it occurs. I believe the reasoning behind it is that an outside attack usually causes citizens to rally around their government - you need look no further than Pearl Harbor or September 11 for examples of this.

The way it can occcur if that people are looking for revenge. I can see that they could get happy when you slammed the enemy, but not when the war breaks out. Pearl Harbor, did not make anyone happy, but winning a battle could after it.

'Happiness' in Civ 3 terms equates to being happy with the government, not being happy generally. It' quite possible for a person to be generally unhappy but still support their government.
