I thought it would be good for us to have a thread for members to state when they will be inactive for any length of time. This will be important information when the game actually starts.
Everyone should post in here when they will be away. This means we won't be hanging around waiting for replies to PM's or feedback on ideas when they've gone on holiday for a month.
It's not a big deal that I won't be here, but I'm going to London for the weekend.
Leaving: Today
Returning: Sunday evening

What are the procedures for an absence as far as voting is concerned? I may not be able to get to a pc for a few days at a time over the thanksgiving break and would like to participate in votes. As a quorum is undoubtedly needed to make any major decisions, can we proxy our votes to someone who will be available?

If I'm going to be away for a vote, I don't see what the problem with telling, say, NYE to cast a vote on my behalf. Why is that undemocratic? I use my voice, through NYE.

If possible, I'd wait for the elections after at least some playing is done between the contestants. How are the rest going to decide who is most suited for a job? I mean, the diplo scola is different, but I feel that the mililtary leader should be an able general himself, if he wants to have more weight in a discussion. But indeed, if thanksgiving will prevent half our team of playing, we should push forward here... so that at least the candidates are already kown.

So do you think we should start elections soon or not?
As far as the election decisions go, it's up to each individual to assess their own situation, how much time they have, how much experience they have etc etc before they decide to run for a post.
Each contestant can post reasons why you think the others should vote for him, campaigning has always been a crucial part to the Civ3Demo game. If someone knows little or nothing about military command, or city planning then they should not try to run for Chief General or a City Planner-type job. If you have the skills and you feel you'll do a good job, then come forward, if you are unsure then it's still not a BAD thing to wait until the second round of elections when you've gained some experience in the game.
I don't know any of you guys personally, nor do I know any of the others on the teams personally, but I read their posts and have my own impressions of them, like I'm sure all of you do as well. And that's while I'll vote for whoever I think has represented themselves and their skills well.
I'm sure each member here will have the opportunity to hold a ministerial position SOMETIME in the game, unless of course they don't want to.
REMEMBER, each Chief from the Schola can appoint deputies to help him in his duties. Technically the Schola's were built so that the remaining members under the Chief could offer crucial advice, ideas, and carry out various small assignments. That's why they chose the branch of Schola that appeals to them the most, so they can make a difference in an area that they feel they have some familiarity with.
So I guess if you intend to run for a Chief position, then soon you'll have to state your intention to do so, so that way everyone has plenty of tiem to decide who they want to vote for.

Written earlier and unable to post due to darkness falling....
Indeed, some Chiefs will need a lot of help as the game goes on. Well, one of them actually.
Economics is a massive job after a bit. Workers, build ques, city placement planning, etc.
However, the first 10 turns or so are going to be very slow. Not much to do on any given turn. Actually, make that more like 20 turns. I keep playing with accelerated production on. It will be off for this game. At any rate, it is an ideal time for any and most every major issue to be discussed amongst us all. That will help people learn and get to know each other.
The Diplomats though, they have lots to do already. There would be no problem with them deciding amongst themselves to put forth a Chief now. It might be a good idea actually.
Also, we need to confirm the player and the second. I'll go back to the other thread on that topic.
