I hate that the city names and leader lists are not standarized. It is especially the city names that I hate. If the game had some other way of telling how many cities each civ had, it would be ok to have a long list of city names.

Since there is no method other than counting, I propose a different naming convention.

A. City names begin with a 2 digit number
B. The 3rd character is an '_' character
C. The rest of the name not exceed 12 characters so on zoom out you don't have city names overlapping important info.
D. Each civ have 25 cities.

This way by quickly looking at the highest numbered city you can see how many cities each civ has currently.

Careful, if you put this in your .bix file, the next patch will wipe it out.
Therefore I have put the 400-500 city names into a spreadsheet. It is easy to write a formula to put the numbers and '_' into the front of the city name.

The hard part is deciding the best 25 city names for each civ. At least because of this thread we have some clues for Spain.


Leaders is another sorry state of affairs. Some civs only have a few and others have gobs. You would think there should be at least 10 good leaders for each civ. They would not all have to be military but should be a mix of military and non-military leaders. After all a general might not be the best leader to hurry the Internet.

My problem is I would rather play the game than edit the city names.

Other than Germany, which I have completed, are there any suggestions of the best 25 names to use for each civ?

Are there any suggestions of the best 10 leader's to use for each civ?

If you mean the leader Abraham Lincoln, he was born near Hogdenville, Kentucky.

Also you didn't mention the MOST important Springfield in the US - the one where the Simpsons live! If you don't know by now, it is Springfield, Kentucky!

"Tampa Bay" is the name of the big, wet thing near the city, and (who knows why) part of the name of their football team. The name of the city is simply "Tampa." Change that list, buster!

Why do you want so few? The unsaid motive for this thread is the need for more cities, so we don't have to see cities with recycled names (e.g., New Paris).

I do agree with your point that it should be easier to determine how many cities each civ has. At the very least the list of cities on the advisor screen should be numbered.

Lighten up, its my list, and I like "Tampa Bay" the way it is. If you don't like it then change it in your own list.

Oh, my fault! I had mistakenly thought the Idea of this thread was to provide an expanded list of city names for different civ's. I did not think this would be a flame thread. I hate to ruin good fun such as throwing insults and accusations around, not to mention going on a for no damn reason

Wine, eh? Well, if you're the imaginative type, you could say that the citizens naming the city were too drunk from the wine to notice.

Yes, your list for China is quite good, but I will probably add these to the names after the default ones, even though many are different names for the same city. I am not looking to recreate history, just to have enough names in my registry that I don't suddenly run into the problem of coming up with a name in mid-game.

If I can be serious for a moment (yeah, I'm going out of character), is there a limit to how long names can be or how many names can be on a list? If so, what are those limits?

Is there any problem with using "nonstandard" (for Americans anyway) letters in names? (e.g. "ö"). I mention that only because all of the default names include no such special characters (e.g. "n" instead of "ñ").

I don't know the answer to your first question, Underseer, but it would be easy to test by replacing the capital city of a civ with a long string, say ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ for starters, and see what displays in a new gamestart.

For your second question, it depends on the code page your local computer is using. I tried using one that displayed Cyrillic characters (I was playing Russia), but the Latin characters with diacritical marks did not display correctly. I believe the standard setup will display almost all the so-called special characters in the Latin set.

Just so it is a easily multiplied number and some civs are hard to come up with 25 reasonable city names. new25_AAAA means you have 2x 25 or 50 cities. Aztec, Carth, Golths, Zulu examples of civs not easy to get names for.

Best would be an info screen from Firaxis telling us the number of cites each civ has, but without that use the numbering system to keep track of each civ's size easier.

Ok I stand corrected. Springfield was listed because that is where Lincoln lived when he was elected to the House. Trivia- his one and only house in Springfield, ILL, was purchased for $1,500.
