MOO3 vs GalCiv Put an end to popups!

What are the big difference between them?
I get the idea that GC will be more story/RP like, but i also remember something about your Council-members having their own history, influencing their actions...so, where are the differences from a gameplay perspective?

I'll probably end up getting both MOO3 and GC if/when they are available in europe, but some more info is always better

The difference is Moo3 is coming out and Galciv may or may not be a pipe dream.

I should wonder how a game is called a beta version when it does not have many of the key parts in it? Would that be a aplha or prototype? I mean beta is a completed application that is being QA tested?

This is not a discussion about the meaning of "beta".

Lemmy, GalCiv has an active backstory, yes. There are other differences as well, but mainly these two offerings overlap. Did you ever play the original GalCiv on OS/2?

Nope, never played the original GalCiv, or any of the MOO's.

That's also why i'm looking forward to these new games, since both originals were highly praised by gamers and gamesites.

Lemmy no I do not know any difference as Moo3 has not put out a demo and Galciv is way too far away from being evaluated. I expect both to be good games though.

Galciv is ugly. I need some graphics to play a game cant handle old graphics like that. Civ3 is okay for me and its not all that graphic but animations and map are nice.

This game looks terrible. There using sprites and combat is ala Civ3 like it looks. I rather shy from that I like the MOO3 being voxel and having large battles.

The interface and map for Galciv is ugly as well. I like MOO3 more technical look. Not a game for me thats for sure.

Although it might well cost them sales.

MOO3 seems much more coherent/simulation. It seems GalCiv is more gamish. Where MOO3 builds races that could really exist, GalCiv is in some sort of archetypes, the big bad guy with etc. And it seems to be like this here and there from what I've seen. Doesn't mean it wont be a fun game for many and wont innovate though! They do have a beta, but you have to buy the game in advance to get in it, so we don't have alot info.

We'll see...... we'll see.......

I would think GalCiv has at least as much sim in it as MOO3, but maybe on a different level.
IIRC when you colonize/discover a planet you may have to deal with any primitive native inhabitants, enslave them, give 'm their own space, or just leave the planet alone.

It' s coming out in February or March...i think they are on schedule. And it is coming out (unlike Stars! Supernova )

Both games are different...i think we'll see a lot of events in GalCiv. Also you can decide to become good or evil....that could be funny

Why don't you download MoO from an abandonware site and try it? It's great, that's what makes it a classic.

Tired of ads?

Well Galciv is really ugly compared =)

Anyway MOO3 looks more option open then Galciv. Also I didnt like the screens for Galciv much they look simple. The realtime battles in MOO3 is what will keep the game looking good and moving alone. Even the ground combat screen is cool looking so I heard.

This game just seems alittle lite on the graphics for me =)

Yes, GalCiv hasn't got the prettiest 2d graphics, but MOO3 can't go beyond 800x600 :P
So both are limited graphics-wise, but they aren't about graphics, but about gameplay, but it seems noone here really knows something about galciv

Gal Civ Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

I think that Diplomacy is heavily emphasized in Gal Civ, but then again, it is also supposed to be big in MOO3. I have yet to see any game really get diplomacy / politics down right, so if either of them do, I will be very pleased.

I am not part of the beta testing, but i have been following GalCiv for a couple of months now.

Best info you can get is here:

http://www.galciv.com/index.asp

Check the Encyclopedia

In GalCiv you can only be the humans. The reason for that is that they implement a lot of events. This is supposed to give you with each game the feeling that you're experiencing a new adventure. But here again, MOO3 has a lot of story elements in it (but more globally i guess).
Combat resolution in GalCiv is something like in CIV. So you don't get a special combat screen unlike MOO3. The reason is that they want Grand Politics and Strategy.
The game is for single player only, why? because the want to focus on a very good AI. Furhtermore it let's more space on the cd-rom for events.
You've got 5 winning options which are supposed to be equal:
1. Military Conquest.
2. Politival Conquest.
3. Economic Conquest.
4. Technological Conquest.
5. United Galaxy.

This is slightly more than in MOO3.
Other questions?

You know, I always chuckle at the people that have to denigrate one game in order to feel good about their purchase/playing of another. It's so childish. I've been a MOO fan since way back, loved MOO and MOO2 - and I am really wanting MOO3 to be a great game - and if reviews are supportive, then I'll be buying the game.

But I've also been following GalCiv for quite a while, having read alot of favorable reviews about the ancient O/S2 version, and I got really excited when I heard it was being ported to Windows. Based upon the developer's track record and public beta, I have good confidence this is going to be a very good game. Also, note, the development team are big fans of MOO/MOO2.

That said, I hope to buy both games. There's certainly room for two 4X games in the market, and I think they can certainly help develop that market further. Putting down one or the other is just plain silly and immature. Both have strengths and weaknesses I suspect - but hopefully, both will bring something different to the table that will allow us to enjoy both of them.

The SS I have seen for both games have been perfectly acceptable. I anticipate MoO3 and GalCiv living in harmony on my PC for many months, provided Hearts of Iron doesn't crush them under its tank treads before they research the tech to escape into space
