As with the Chinese, I doubt we would learn much from Japan's maps. I wouldn't give them any tech for it. It's worth sending them Caravans if the Chinese don't want something we are offerring, though. And peace for free is about right; they are not a threat to us at the moment.

Put an end to popups!

We need their maps to find cities for trading partners. IF we can't steal feudalism from the chinese, we should trade for it with Japanese or Carths.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

We can only deliver caravans to their coastal city's, any other unloaded vans will probably get slaughtered by them

Trade vans that are in demand and witch the Chinese dont want.

We could just build and deliver an Explorer to the Japanese mainland... We *do* have a cease-fire with them at the moment. There is not all that much territory to explore.

Due to thei attitude, I doubt they are willing axchange maps.
So we have to discover their territory. As caravans are too vulnerable, why not a NON musketer (even if it's slow)

Just curious....what's the benefit to be gained by exploring their mainland, unless we're planning to invade, or build a city there? Are we planning to invade? Are we planning to build a city there? Are bannanas really yellow?

Am I asking too much to question the intentions of our renowned leaders?

Well, we only know where 6 of their 10 cities are and we don't know where their capital is. It might be an excellent trade route target.

I'm with you now . Do trade routes with capitals earn more because they are the capital, or is it purely dependant on size/ demand for trade goods/distance? Judging from one of the other posts, I assume it also depends on volume of trade generated within that city.

The capital is *usually* the largest in population and trade arrows especially with AI's. I just want to know where Kyoto is so that we can take advantage of the trade possibilities.

We are in agreement!

An Explorer could reveal the blank territory in just a few moves. I worthwhile investment, I think.

We could send a diplomat instead. Explorers are quick but of little use once they've explored a given area, and the area in the centre of Japan isn't that large. However a diplomat could steal tech or bribe units/cities. Plus explorers cost 1 shield in support per turn, diplomats nothing. Whilst he might get expelled, I like to have the options a diplomat presents.

If I want to learn the territory, I send an Explorer. If I want to set up an embassy or bribe units.cities, I'll send a Dip. To every purpose, there is a unit...

It depends largely on the combined tradearrows of the 2 city's.

Some other variables:

Distance
Connected by (rail)road
Different continets
Wether Inv and Nav have been discovered
Caravan or Freight
Direct path to receiving city
Etc

Is there anything you don't know about this game? You constantly amaze me with the things you've learned. I didn't realize that having a railroad connection helped.

Question: What do you mean about "Direct path to receiving city"? You mean no intervening cities or do you mean an intervening ship transport or something else entirely? And is a direct path good or is it bad?

A lot, check out guys like Samson in the strategy section, what they are figuring out now about the changes in demand and supply.

Compared to those guys I'm just a simple noob

Take an explorer and let him walk from suplying city to receiving city via the GOTO command.

When using this path with the caravan it yields a higher revenue then taking another road.

Just one of the many glitches in Civ as stated in the GL

Beware, the direct path may be different from city A to City B and from city B to city A.
The use of an explorer to see the optimal path is interesting, because with other units, the GOTO path is corrupted by existing road and RR or easy ground.
