The Prime Minister's director of communications, Francoise Ducros, said of Bush, "What a moron." The comment apparently was made in the presence of at least two reporters. In Ottawa, Canadian Alliance MP Jason Kenney wanted to know if the quote was accurate. And if it is, "does it reflect the views of the Liberal government?" Conservative leader Joe Clark said if such a statement was made the offending party "should be on a plane home right now." The PMO issued a brief statement: "The Prime Minister's Office never comments on newspaper reports attributed to unnamed sources." White House spokesman Ari Fleischer, who is accompanying Bush in Prague, dismissed the comment as coming from "somebody who obviously doesn't speak for the Canadian government." The problem is Francoise Ducros does speak for the Canadian government, usually on background and off the record. The quote first attributed to a government official was soon linked to Ducros and widely reported. Whether the comment was on the record or not, the opposition says the comment was inappropriate, coming from an official representing the government of Canada. Others say the comment will only further chill the dialogue between Washington and Ottawa. The prime minister is now under pressure to take action against one of his most loyal advisers.

This isn't anything like the Hitler comment. It is quite rich invoking Godwin's law with Germany--and saying it publicly, no less.

Of course, this comment is silly, but everybody has their own opinion. And besides, noting the source, who cares?

Well, now it seems Chretien will have to fire that adviser. Otherwise the chill is inevitable. By refusing to meet with Schroeder, Bush has demonstrated how far he is ready go over such personal insults.

I'm split on if he's going to make a big deal about it to draw attention away from his extremely laughable and pathetic "Kyoto implementation plan" announced today or if he's going to say that the guy's been punished and move on.

The Vagabond: Schroeder deserves all the chill being dished out by Bush. After his advisor made the remark, Schroeder sent an apology letter to Bush that read more like a justification for the remark.

Saying somebody is a moron is hardly associating him with a genocidal mass murderer. Nobody even said "Yeh, big time".

DanS: FYI I don't say Schroeder doesn't deserve the chill. On the other hand, Chretien explicitly saying that Bush is not a moron somehow parallels the apology letter of Schroeder.
