	City Naming Conventions Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

It's bound to come up, and since there are limits to what we can usefully discuss prior to the game commencing maybe we can mull this over.

Options would be:

1. Stick with PTW defaults. <---- Period

2. Stick with PTW defaults and rename specific cities when the situation warrants it and we agree.

3. Rename cities according to a system devised and agreed to. For instance, name cities after geographical features on Earth, Oceans then Continents then Mountain Ranges then...

4. Rename cities based on individual decisions in some sort of set order. For instance, earliest member ID on Poly goes first and can name a city whatever he/she wants, then the next earliest and so on...

5. Any other ways to do this?

btw, the naming systems could be other than those I have specified. For instance, deities could be used instead of geological features. Some other convention could be used to determine the order of who gets to name which city, etc.

Didn't we have a longrunning list of funny city names like "You're going the wrong way" or "Want to die?" or etc? FP had a bunch of those, and so did others. I still think it's a pretty entertaining idea, although it may wreak havoc during orders for city build queus....

An idea: what if we keep a log here with the original names, or the initial names if those are different, and when a name changes (situation), we indicate it here? Doing so, we have an internal name to not get confused ourselves, and use funny, taunting names that can change every 2 or 3 turns to make it more difficult on the other teams.

I would definately not stick with the original names, that's too dull...

Oh, the changing names idea certainly isn't mine, I saw it on the general forum (don't have a clue who said it.) But even if we only sometimes change, keeping a log would be needed, and using those names in our posts would help us...

I'm not sure a log would cure more confusion than it would cause. At least without a log, cities would have only a single name at any given time, whereas with the log, the names we'd use in discussion would be completely mismatched with what's on the map.

I have nothing against silly names as long as they don't edge toward profanity (which I have a strong distaste for, even when asterisked out or otherwise muddled), but I'd really prefer to stick with names once we establish them. And I don't think using names that taunt other teams would help our diplomatic situation. Even teams not directly involved might view our actions as being in bad taste and/or take extra precautions to avoid being on the receiving end themselves. (Although if someone else starts the practice, I wouldn't be opposed to returning the favor.)

I'm sure we'll figure out which names we want eventually. The 'funny' names were just an idea I remembered hearing in our first chat. I would not mind funny/serious names either way.

I'm lurking in the Civ2 MP forum sometimes and a while ago saw a screenshot with heavily fortified city named "Fuck you" there. Guess we better shouldn't be that "creative", should we?

Names like "**** you" just aren't funny, well .... not if you are over 14 years of age. I think we can come up with wittier names than those Civ2 guys.

was it as bad as it sounds?

btw, they just release the entire first series on special edition DVD here. It has deleted scenes and commentaries from the writers and cast. Sounds awesome! I only have the episodes on 5-10 year old VHS tapes. The quality of the picture and sound is poor. I'm gonna get the DVD for christmas.

What are we going to call it?

Here's a thought about naming conventions: Why not name our cities (at least the ones we build ourselves) after types of storms, cloud formations, etc.?

One option for our capital might be "Storm Central."

I was just thinking the same thing. It would be nice if we could formulate a pre-made list of city names and just follow the list one after the other as we build.

I suggest we name our cities with ideas that border the 'Gathering Storm' idea, which to me sounds like a really natural, earthy, worldly type name. Hmm, here's a few thoughts:

Stormwind Keep (capital?)

Lightning Alley
Cyclone City
Wraith Mountain
Port of the Tempests
Elementia
Thunder Valley

just some first ideas, I'm sure we could get more if some people thought about it.

Or would we rather go a different naming route?

Eye of the Storm for the capitol.

I like going with the Storm theme, at least at first. As we get further into the game, we can find room for some funnies ("Built for Strategic Sheep Purposes" might cause some amused confusion, for instance).
