Squid worries Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

[RP] What happens if we run out of squid? Or if we find ourselves in a place where squid are hard to find? Where are we going to get enough squid to feed all the Spanish tribe? What can we eat instead? Is there any such thing as land squid? What if some other tribe wants squid? I don’t want squid to become a luxury! Then I’ll never see it again! But what if it is, and they don’t want squid, and that’s the only luxury we have? [/RP]

I tell you. There is no way we can run out of squids, unless some immoral supplier ORGANIZES the shortage before increasing sharply the price. Lets imagine that such a supplier subsidizes lavishly a stone paper, provides a free life supply of squids to high ranking executives, etc; all that requires enourmous amounts of cash, and we the people will pay for that.

There is no need for fear! The squids will always be suplying us with their tasty tentacles! There is an agreement on way between me and Senõr Hernan De History Guy Calamari on feeding squids with fine wine. This can make them grow strong and delicious.
Also, I´d like to say that some doubts said abut my future trading partner are all but mindless ofenses. He is a respected man, and that is atested by everyone. Just ask to that guy eating a squid there! And that guy in that tavern!
Long live the Squids!
And buy wine! Fine wine! Sweet and bitter! Makes people dizzy!Very good!

Mr. Pikesfan, I know how dear squids are to you all, and I promise that if we have a shortage (a very unlikely event), I would pay us with squids from my own pockets if needs be! Spain needs the squid, the staple food of Iberia. However, I will assure you that we hire special trackers, men like Gastronome Neecap, who call themselves 'Squid Trackers'. These rough and tumble men are paid well and will stop at little to find fresh supplies of the best squid possibly available. Think of them as squid bounty hunters. Anyone can sign up for the task and receive large amounts of free squid and a good reward to boot. These men are specially trained to detect underground currents in which squids might be hiding, and to listen for the distinctive sounds of squids in oceans. These men can leap nine feet into the water to grab squids and wrangle them to bring back. Rest assured, even if we end up in desert, these specially hired men will bring back bounties of fresh squid in order to keep our people well supplied at all times.

As for Mr. Davout, I'm sure that he does not refer to me as an "immoral supplier". I'm sure that he would deeply regret such connotations...(get the wiffle bat, Gastronome).

Senor Winterius is, as ever, correct in everything he says. The squid will last longer when fermented with this fine wine, and they will taste better to boot. With this new deal we shall never ever ever ever ever run out of squids. Squids will be here for everyone, for all men. All men are created equal, and they can all have enough squid to satisfy them.

I love squids, and I'm sure you will too with the new red wine sauce from Nuclearis Winterus and his incredible company. These squids are raised on wine, and boy do they love it. They will appreciate being eaten yet more. Buy these squids, and be satisfied all the time!

I thought Spain was also a major European supplier of all sorts of fruits that the rest of Europe doesn't grow due to unsuitable climates... I would think that these, especially the ones native to Spain, could be something of a "staple of the Spanish diet", no?

Arnelos-- What?! Noooooooooo!

Well, of course, there are other foods, but we all need protein, and since we are Spanish, we need something to replace meat on Wednesdays and Fridays, and so, voila, the squid. And, of course, everyone loves it so much they eat it year round.

Ninot, though I am inclined to agree with you on most things, I must say that I don't think that you are a fool. Especially not since you made your last order of wine fed squid.

Ah, Ninot, my amigo, I am presenting you with a free plate of wine fed squid. I might as well do this because I'm making so much squid revenue all ready. Nuclearis Winterus and I have made ourselves a large fortune, and we seek to share it for the bettermeant of society. Perhaps we could contribute to the town improvements ourselves, eh? Perhaps even the city council would like a contribution...for the bettermeant of the population, of course...

So.

We can start calling our goldpieces "Squid"!

1g=1 Squid
.1g=1 ?
.01g?=?

EDIT: No, too complicated for when I open my Squid factory...oops,. its supposed to be secret. you didnot hear;that.

However, I doubt that we as a nation will have any problems with a Squid shortage. Spain can rise above any problem there is!!!

1Sq

.1Sq = 1 Tentacle
.01Sq = 1 Sucker uhhh, bad name for a coin Anyone have any better ideas?
10Sq = 1 Flock, as in a flock of squid, or whatever it is squid congregate in, maybe a school?
100Sq = 1 Population? What do you call a whole lot of squid in one place? Besides Today’s Dinner at the Tavern?

Or we could be even more interesting by adopting Base 12 and having our money in

1/144
1/12
1
12
144

After all, we are unaware of the power of 10 because we haven’t discovered Mathematics yet.

When we invent Banking, the word for Interest should be derived from the ancient word for Wine Sauce.

Nuclearius Winterius, my faithful partner, is quite correct. Our squids are the best, the best priced, the best tasting, the best health-wise, the best politically, the best in every sense. Togas himself backs our squid alone, and with him on our side, who do we stand to fear?

Well, here is my idea. If Señor de Calamari wants to barter something for something that’s hard to barter for, he can tell his business colleagues how many squids he would barter for it, and they could tell him how many squids they would barter for it.

And if he has a busy day at the Tavern and someone puts in a big order of twelve squids, instead of having to tell them it will be twelve squids, he can say it will be a Flock.

12 Squids = 1 Flock
144 Squids = 12 Flocks = 1 School
1728 Squids = 144 Flockss = 12 Schools = 1 Population

I can’t see anyone ever being so hungry that they will ever order a Population of squids, but you never know, maybe one day our beloved Despot will want to buy squids for his entire clan.

Then if he has something little, that is less than a squid, or someone isn’t hungry enough to eat a whole squid and just wants a little snack,

1/12 of a Squid = 1 Tentacle
1/144 of a Squid = 1/12 of a Tentacle = 1 Pop, you know for the noise the suckers make when you pry them loose from the boat.
1/1728 of a Squid is I think too small to see, let alone have a snack. Maybe we could call it a Diet.

So why 12? If we hold a squid in each hand, it’s the number of all the tentacles together.

Got spare money?

I thought of one tactic to keep the slaves in line:

1. Hard-working slaves get fed with good El Squid squid.
2. Lazy slaves get fed with no squid at all!
3. Recalcitrant slaves get fed with nothing but Spam Brand squid. That will be sure to get them in line.

Senor Pikesfan,

Are you saying Spam Brand is not as good as El Squid? Well...okay, then. But Spam Brand Squid, I mind you, is the only Squid cheap enough to be fed to the majority of slaves, instead of just the hard-working or not-working ones.

And as far as that there is ever a Squid shortage, the Spam Brand will plunder the ends of the Apolyton ([ooc] I did not want Apolyton! I wanted Bob! But no...Apolyton had to win the vote...ARGH![/ooc] to find more Squid.

Senor Nuclearius Winterus is quite right. I concede.

Senor Pikesfan, I thank you for your work. At the time there were some mutineers, but we gave them their rations as you suggested, and now they are among our most cheerful and happy workers, totally dedicated to their work. Thanks again. And thanks to Senor Mitchell for clearing up our labor problems!

Senor Mitchell, that may well be, but we are lowering the prices to match yours. Business is even better and we are making far more than before. We must thank you, and only you for that. You have helped us grow our fortune. I'd like to give you six bones for your services. Yet me assure you that we do have enough squid to feed all workers but the discontented. We buy your squid for that.
