He should. He used a North African (now extinct ) species, not the Indian. This "Nabatean" elephant
species measured about 2.35 meters at the shoulder, the Indian measures just under 3 meters and the African bush type about 3.5 meters, and the (also extinct) Syrian may have reached 3.6 meters or more.
The sub-Saharan African species is not domesticable.
BTW, IIRC something like 3 out of his original 37 actually SURVIVED crossing the Alps ...
