Sava, it's mainly aimed at the kids who read the books. those aged 8-14. if older people enjoy it, great. if not, move on to a more mature movie genre.

It's Sava we are talking about, we can't expect him to know good works .

The Harry Potter series is some of the best writing of any book in years.

As for Harry having no confidence, being an orphan and living with the Dursley's for 11 years being put down and just realizing that you were the only one spared from Voldemort's wrath would make me a little less confident.

Sorry, I didn't know you were Neitschze's poster child.

Eh?

Anyway, I saw it, and all I'll say is that Lord of the Rings kicks the **** out of Harry Potter.

LOTR the trilogy kicks Harry Potter series ass, but the movie was a pleasant suprise. First one was a huge load of horsesh*t. I like the books, not because they're well written, but they gave me a nostalgic feeling, sort of like Tolkien and the Hardy Boys rolled into one. Plus I read them with my girlfriend which might have added to the whole experience. Sounds corny but don't knock it til you try it.

Movies, yes... LOTR is better. One of the reasons is the attempt to get everythingof the books into a 3 hour movie.

If we are comparing books, I'll seriously have to say Harry Potter is much better than LOTR trilogy, which frankly is overrated.

Well, duh.

The Harry Potter series are good books, but Lord of the Rings is an absolute masterpiece. Heck, it pretty much created a new genre.

The Lord of the Rings movies are made with an incredible perfection. They have to be, or the director would be skinned alive by fans of the books. (OK, maybe not, but you know what I mean.) So of course the LOTR movies will be superior to the Harry Potter movies.

I still think the Harry Potter movies are rather good, though.

EDIT: Crosspost with Imran. I was talking to gsmoove and DF.

Whoops, actually I hated the LOTR movie, but it was no worse then the first Harry Potter movie IMO. I'm hoping the next LOTR movie will correct its previous mistakes as well as Chamber of Secrets did. As far as movies go I preferred the LOTR animation from a long time ago. Did a much better job of conveying the feeling for me.

Ack, I could understand believing Tolkien is over-rated but Harry Potter books better then LOTR books? Wow.

The one by Ralph Bakshi? Last I heard, it was complete crap. I haven't seen it, though, so I can't know for sure.

But isn't it just a little annoying that only half the book was actually made into a movie?

Yep... LOTR was pretty good, but didn't do it for me as for others. I considered Fellowship absolutely boring, Two Towers pretty good and Return of the King very cool. I absolutely LOVE the Harry Potter books and I feel a greater connection to the characters than any other series I've ever read.

If the entire LOTR trilogy was as good as Return of the King, I may have said LOTR was better than Potter, but I doubt it .

It was annoying that I couldn't see the whole trilogy but I loved the style of animation. Haven't seen it for awhile so I'm not sure but I remember loving it. The new one was so over dramatic it was ridiculous.

I'll agree with Guynemer that this was much better than the first one, even though the second book was the worst.

However, I have two rants! (Spoilers coming)

The snake is too goddamn fat and slow and stupid! It's length was good, but it was too fat! Snakes are supposed to be sly and slithery and thin and quick, not fat oversized worms!

Other rant - I didn't like the end of the chamber scene. In the book, the sequence of events goes:

Harry gets bitten
Harry kills snake
Harry is dying, Tom gloats
Fawkes crys, Harry heals
Harry kills Tom by destroying the book

In the movie Harry gets healed after he kills Tom, which is much less dramatic.

So? And without James Fenimore Cooper there would be no Westerns. Doesn't mean Cooper's works sucked.

Do you think that Jaws is the best blockbuster movie ever, because every blockbuster movie sprung from Jaws?

That's just silly!

Tired of ads?

yeah it is...

but i on what laurels can we judge anything anymore?

gross ticket sales doesnt really mean jack considering it costs 9.25 to see a goddamn movie nowadays...
and considering harry potter is specifically marketed to young children who have read the books and believe its the greatest thing since amsterdam its like shooting fish in a barrell. im not impressed with harry-mania especially among people who are old enough to have children...

Books are always better than the movies...

Well except for Fellowship of the Ring, the movie was better than that book . Though I think the next two LOTR movies won't be as good as the book. I'm looking forward, though, to (SPOILERS) when Sam thinks Frodo is dead and takes up the ring.
