As it stands now many Europeans (for some reason especially Dutch people, perhaps because the game was available earlier?) are not able to play the game with patch 1.14f. The reason seems to be that the US version uses another brand of copy protection than the European version. If those who have the problem install the patch, the program asks to insert the PTW disk even though it is in the drive.
However there are some(?) Europeans that can play with the patch installed. I am curious to know who can and who can not. If you can did you buy PTW in Europe or are you using the US version?
Does anyone know how one can detect whether you have the US version or not?
To start off: I do have the problem and bought my copy of PTW at Dynabyte on september 29 in the Netherlands (and, yes I also bought the original CIVIII so do not accuse me of using illegal stuff as someone suggested in another thread).

I scanned several bulletin boards and came up with the following results.
............................Able to play............Not able to play
Netherlands ...............1...............................9
Belgium......................1...............................1
UK.............................1...............................1
Germany.....................0...............................3
Scotland.....................0...............................1
I will have missed some posts of course.
There seem to be a few US players that have this problem too but I suppose that that originates from a different source (which does not make it better for them, of course).
I do not know which versions are used by those who are able to play and expect that there are more people that can (they have no reason to post). I hope this thread will shed some light on these questions.

I did indeed imply you. Thank you for posting.
Flandrien: The US version has a different copy protection (securom instead of safedisk). That is where this problem comes from.
I conclude that sofar all of those that can play the game use the US version.

Maybe the use of a NO-CD crack as a temporary fix would be justified in this case. I'm not promoting piracy... but the patch is broken.
Link edited by Ming... It's not how you might plan on using it... It's how others might.
It is illegal. If you continue to post the link elsewhere, you will be restricted.

Im not promoting piracy either, but NO-CD cracks are actually very convenient.
My Scenario:
Desk covered in papers, books, cups of tea etc etc etc
Finding a CD takes a few minutes, and disrupts your desktop 'organisation'.
I argue that if you purchased the game, there shouldnt be a problem with using these cracks, even though technically they involve reverse engineering code and are against most eulas.

And it is not against the rules to sell a product that does not work?
I expect some consideration in these special circumstances.

I have uploaded a NO CD for 1.14f and it works. I agree: If you buy a product and it does not work, you HAVE THE RIGHT to find your solution. Apart from that, you PAID FOR IT, so, who cares what you use? I use it only cuz I dont wanna have my CD on the drive, both cuz I like listening to music and cuz I dont wanna get it scratched by my kitten while I handle it.
The address where I ve uploaded the NO CD is the following:

I agree with Ming. I didnt know it was forbidden to post such a thing. Sorry. It wont happen again. I am sorry for all of you who didnt get the address nor the NO CD. It seems you ll have to go on fighting with Firaxis and Infogrames. Good luck in your quest. Anyway, I believe in the power of the masses and the people. So, lets have hope the companies understand you and give you nice solutions.

I understand and support the rules and wait for another day before taking it in my own hands. At least I expect a reaction from Firaxis or Infogrames today. I will be patient for a while longer....

quote: Every judge... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... what fantasy land do you live in |
thus you state that a judge will decide someone who bought civ3, but could not play it, but installed a hack to get it playable, to be guilty?
quote: If there was a guarantee that the hack would only be used for legal purposes, then I might agree with you. But even in your own fantasy land, not even you can guarantee that. |
most people who do pirate games / install it from their friends, do know where to find these hacks anyway.
People who buy games oftenly do not.
and of course I agree that it will be misused.
The point is that it will be misused anyway.
quote: It is a fact that an unauthorized hack is illegal... and that some will use it in an illegal fashion. This site doesn't want to condone or support illegal use of gaming software, so its policy on this issue is a solid one. |
I think it's not illegal if your game doesn't work without the hack. I'm not a laywer, but I (again) doubt that it's against the law to fix something you bought broken.
quote: But again... all you seem to want to do is take cheap shots at the admin here... |
you concider this to be a cheap shot?
I guess the rest of them must be pricelest for that matter
What if you forget about your idea that I have a vendeta against you :| I have not, I'm not a fool.
I just react if I think silly actions are performed. And I think I did it in quiet a polite way. And yes, the thing about the spirit of the laws is a joke. (you had to laugh, didn't you )
now just say that a no-cd link will be tolerated as long as Firaxis didn't provide good working patch.
In that case everybody will be happy.
don't worry about the bad guys, they'll be bad anyway.
be there to help the good guys!
now go and hunt some other vendeta's!
go Ming, you can do it
