If someone honestly does not feel confortable in the body THEY live in then THEY have the right to do whatever THEY want with THEIR body. If anything improves the quality of life for someone then I am all for it. You know what I think is "IMMORAL and disrespectful"? Someone who willingly and knowingly would deny someone something that could greatly improve the quality of THEIR life.

Well, I've donned the flame-retardant suit, and will give my honest to goodness opinion on this matter, speaking as a non-transgendered female individual who has no plans to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
I admit, first off, that I don't completely understand what it feels like to be transgendered. I'm sure that most of us on this board also don't understand it as well. We are each comfortable in our own genders, in our own bodies. We can't fathom looking into a mirror, and seeing a complete stranger. Hating our bodies. Longing to be the other sex. Feeling trapped and limited in the body you have. Hating sex. Often wishing to die, rather than live with the inner conflict.
Getting gender reassignment surgery is NOT something people do "on a whim". It takes a VERY long time. First, a transgendered person must seek professional counselling for a certain length of time before getting a letter of recommendation by this said professional to a hormone doctor saying that, indeed, this person is transgendered and it would be best for his/her psychological health to begin hormone replacement.
The patient then receives certain amounts of hormones every month. All this is completely reversible until a certain point, and then it's irreversible. After about a year or so, the person can choose to get the gender reassignment surgery or surgeries. For FtM, it requires at least two surgeries. One to remove the breasts [top surgery], and the other to shape the penis [bottom surgery]. I probably misused "shape" there, because after beginning hormone treatment, the clitoris grows in size so it's about the size of a small penis anyway. But it still has to be re-wired and all. ^_~ For MtF people, of course the vagina needs to be created, and some people opt for breast implants, but all MtF people grow their own breasts naturally. (But you know how some women can be!)
So you see, this process takes YEARS and costs THOUSANDS of dollars. It cannot be done "on a whim" and it is not done haphazardly, either. Also, I don't believe it's immoral. I think that if someone is uncomfortable with his/her body, s/he should be allowed to change it.
I'm fat. I should be allowed to lose weight. I can see a councellor to help me get through self-image issues, but it won't change the fact that I'm fat, and I don't like it. So I will go to the gym, change my eating habits, and lose the weight. It won't come off right away, and I could always go back on the couch and start eating ice cream and lard to gain the weight back. But it should all be MY decision. It's MY body. It's MY life. If you don't like it, you're entitled to that opinion.
I have a few transgendered friends, all at various stages of their transitions. I have known one of them for two years. I know, to a very small degree, what it's like. And I don't think that they should be told to suck it up and live in a body that they despise. What's further, they are all open about their transgendered-ness (don't know the word for it xD). Their partners know. Their friends know. It's not a shameful secret. I don't know any transgendered individuals who lie about their gender.
I have to agree with what old dziadek ( ) said. If we're going to brand transsexuals, we might as well brand other people, too.

Oh boo hoo I made one mistake in terminology. Still doesn't change how disgusting and inappropriate the procedure is. Asher and Zkribbler made the same mistake even though they share your views. I guess twice the ignorance lives on your side of the debate

If it's icing on my cake, same goes with theirs, or we get the double standard - don't be a total hack now, darling.
As for meeting with these lovely specimens, I'd rather keep my distance. In any case, what the hell would it prove having met them? There's no special inner being one would have that a normal human being doesn't once this atrocity takes place. They're simply normal people mutilated and tricking others - it doesn't get any simpler.
